RE: Gulls of Europe, Asia & North America by Olsen/Larsson

Thanks for the replies. I did buy the Grant book last year via eBay which will have to do for now. Like a lot of birders, I haven't gone into gull id in any great way other than the norm but am now finding that I want to compare juvenile plumages, look at the various Herring Gulls for example and so on. Thanks again!

Worth looking for a first edition and trying to bargain on a knock down price. Whilst there is a list of errata numbering 20 or so, they are all pretty negligable.

It remains the best current gull book for the region no doubt but personally I don't actually rate it that much. The information within isn't that thorough in places (if you know owt about Armenian Gull you'll know what I mean) and lots of the info throughout is simply repeated or expanded to death with little real 'meat' at times. Try to find in-depth info about 3rd winter plumages of the 'large white headed gull complex' and it comes up considerably short for me. I think it's well overdue for a revision as gull identification has moved on considerably since then even and I firmly believe it could be a whole lot better.

Do any of you gull enthusiasts know if an update to the above book is pending? I think the last edition (hardback) is Sept 2004 and I fancy buying it, but not if it's about to be updated. Thanks.
