I had a Woodcock fly over the A666 just south of the Green Arms Road turning at circa 11.30 today.
Stonechat and 3 Kestrel on Green Arms Road
Entwistle Reservoir was quiet with 6 Cormorant, a dozen Mallard and a small group of Black-headed Gull. In the adjacent woods, only tit species with Great, Blue and Coal noted, plus calling Goldcrest.
In comparison, the excellent Strawbury Duck was packed!
Reservoir :- 1 Cormorant, 15 Grey Herons, 4 Canada Geese, 14 Mallards, 1 Common Sandpiper, 3 Black-headed Gulls. I only covered part of the woodland but birds included Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers, Goldcrests, Nuthatches, Treecreepers, Chaffinches, Siskins, & Lesser Redpolls.
18 Grey Herons showing in the heronry. 1 Cormorant & a few Mallards were the only birds on the reservoir. A Tree Pipit on my way down to the reservoir from Greens Arms Road was my first one this year.
Reservoir scanned from the embankment road at 11.00am.
Unusual not to see Grey Herons flying away from the reservoir on my way up here, so with most birds in the heronry I had my best count of the year with 24 showing. 2 Cormorants 3 Canada Geese 10 Mallards 1 Black-headed Gull 1 Grey Wagtail
Broad Meadow Farm :- 2 Swallows feeding at the small pond are presumably breeding birds from the farm stables. Also 4 Mallards & 2 Moorhens on the pond. Also had a Raven flying over.
Easter Monday, 28th March 2016. 13:40 - 14:30 hrs. From Strawbury Duck pub across 'Dam Wall" road (Batridge Road) of Entwistle Reservoir.
Highlight - From 'Dam Wall' Road - 12 Heron nests visible with either 1 or 2 adults perched on top Cormorant x 2 House Sparrow x 1 Goldfinch x 5 Kestrel x 2 Blue Tit x 1
3 Meadow Pipits & a Reed Bunting between Greens Arms Road & the reservoir.
Very little on the reservoir or in the reservoir woodland. 1 Great Crested Grebe 2 Cormorants Only 9 Grey Herons visible but odd ones seen flying in as I checked farmland No Canada Geese & only a few Mallards 2 Black-headed Gulls
Edge Lane farmland :- 1 Grey Heron, pair of Canada Geese, pair of Mallards, 2 Lapwings, 3 Curlews, 1 Snipe, 6 Skylarks, 11 Meadow Pipits, 2 Pied Wagtails.
Scanned the reservoir from the embankment road around 10am.
1 Great Crested Grebe 3 Cormorants, one with an almost wholly white head, apart from the black down the back of the head. I have seen Cormorants with plenty of white on their heads but never this much. 12 Grey Herons showing, one flying in disappeared from sight into the heronry so possibly more hidden away. 7 Canada Geese 15 Mallards 1 Grey Wagtail
8 Cormorants 13 Grey Herons 18 Canada Geese 29 Mallards 28 Black-headed Gulls 1 Herring Gull 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Dipper on the stream at the top end
Original plan was to scan the reservoir before heading up to the moors. As the mist moved in as I headed up here and stayed for most of the morning I spent 3 hours around here from 8.45am.
All woodland paths checked whilst everywhere else was fogbound. Not a lot about the best being :- 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Song Thrushes, 1 Nuthatch, numerous Goldcrests & Chaffinches, 1 Lesser Redpoll.
About 10am the mist moved away from the farmland above the reservoir so I headed up to Edge Lane :- 1 Buzzard, 1 Skylark, 27 Redwings, 1 Blackbird, 1 Song Thrush, 49 Carrion Crows, 3 Rooks, 2 Magpies, 5 Goldfinches.
Back at the reservoir viewing was still down to about 20 yards, but around 11.20am it started to clear. Finally all clear after a sleet shower. 8 Cormorants 15 Grey Herons 21 Canada Geese 25 Mallards 3 Black-headed Gulls
Heronry back in business. Very noisy in that area with 8 birds back. 3 Cormorants 31 Mallards 44 Black-headed Gulls
Hardly anything around the woods so I headed up the field to Edge Lane. Meadow Pipit & Reed Bunting on the way up there.
Nothing much along Edge Lane but just before Edge Fold there was a Buzzard in a tree.
At Edge Fold there was a Kestrel in a tree. A Nuthatch was nearby. A Raven flew over.
2 Moorhens by a frozen pond heading to Broad Meadow Farm. Unfrozen pond near the farm had 6 Mallards & 3 Moorhens. Usual stuff in this area included a few Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, & Bullfinches.
After a few counts of the heronry I kept getting 25 birds. A Buzzard then flew low across the top of the heronry putting up lots of herons and making the others stand up. Easy to count them all now, an impressive 39. 1 Cormorant 6 Canada Geese 12 Mallards 18 Black-headed Gulls
Only about 10 Grey Herons showing. Presumably others were sheltering lower down in the wood. Would not be pleasant on tops of the trees today. 1 Cormorant 15 Canada Geese 25 Mallards 34 Black-headed Gulls 1 Nuthatch Flock of 30+ Siskins flying over 30+ Goldfinches with a Greenfinch along Overshores Road
9.25 to 13.00. Reservoir, Greens Arms Road, & Edge Lane.
3 Cormorants, c25 Grey Herons, 6 Canada Geese, 12 Mallards, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Buzzard, Pheasants, 2 Curlews, Black-headed Gulls, no sign of the Mediterranean Gull today but has been spotted a few times apart from my sighting a few days ago, 10 Feral Pigeons, Woodpigeons, 1 Cuckoo (different one to my earlier one near Greens Arms Road), Great Spotted Woodpecker, Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, 1 Tree Pipit, Pied Wagtails, Wrens, Robins, Blackbirds, Mistle Thrushes, Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers, Goldcrests, Long-tailed Tits, Coal Tits, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Nuthatches, Jays, Magpies, Carrion Crows, Chaffinches, Goldfinches, Siskins, Lesser Redpolls, Bullfinches, & Reed Buntings.
Green-veined Whites, Orange Tips, Peacocks, & Small Tortoiseshells.
Unable to find a Redstart which has been around for a few days, but at least I found the Tree Pipit in the area that it had been seen in as I searched for it.
Edge Lane :- 1 Grey Heron 2 Curlews 1 Mediterranean Gull with 80+ Black-headed Gulls. Stuck out like a sore thumb, after checking hundreds, if not thousands of gulls unsuccessfully locally over the last few weeks. 2 Skylarks 3 Meadow Pipits 3 Pied Wagtails 7 Wheatears 1 Willow Warbler 80+ Carrion Crows 2 Reed Buntings 1 Brown Hare Family of Rabbits Green-veined Whites, Orange Tips, Small Tortoiseshells
1 Great Crested Grebe 1 Cormorant About a dozen Grey Herons in the heronry 6 Canada Geese 9 Mallards 1 Whimbrel on a field just behind the conifers on the north bank 2 Black-headed Gulls 2 Grey Wagtails 1 Raven flying over
Very windy up here so I just had a quick scan from the embankment before heading back to a sheltered Wayoh
Heronry is now up and running, 22 birds this morning. 1 Cormorant 7 Canada Geese 26 Mallards 16 Black-headed Gulls 1 immature Herring Gull on the water, and an adult passing through
9.45am to 11.15am around the reservoir & up around Edge Lane.
5 Cormorants 7 Grey Herons back in the Heronry 7 Canada Geese 37 Mallards 1m Pochard (any duck except Mallards is unusual here) 12 Black-headed Gulls + lots more flying over A few Woodpigeons 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers 3 Meadow Pipits A few Wrens, Robins, & Blackbirds 5 Mistle Thrushes Long-tailed Tits, Coal Tits, Blue Tits, & Great Tits 2 Nuthatches Jays, Carrion Crows, & Starlings A pair of Bullfinches were the only finches I saw or heard A flock of 5 Reed Buntings
