RE: Other Sports

Hi Bill and Henry,
Thanks for your site suggestions for Bird watching on Anglesey. I'll try and visit some of the places youve mentioned. Unfortunately I'm leaving early Saturday so I wont be able to meet you Bill but thanks anyway. Also your good wishes for my Marathon run I wish I had the confidence in my ability as you have in me. Hope to see you at Ogden soon.
Cheers Dave Phillips.

Normally i'd recommend seawatching from Cemlyn/the Stacks or Point Lynas Dave but the wind isn't forecast to be strong in any direction.
With this in mind probably best to look for passerine migrants. Good spots include the stacks and the range area of Holy Island, Penmon peninsula (leading down to the lighthouse), Point Lynas, Cemlyn area. Should be pipits, wagtails, warblers etc on the move with a chance of pretty much anything dropping in at this time of year.
The Alaw estuary, just before the bridge over to Holy Island, currently has Baird's and Curlew Sandpiper with Little Stints and great for other waders and ducks. Plus the chance of 12 Glossy Ibis dropping back in! Other good wader spots include Dulas Bay, Red Wharf Bay (of Green Heron fame), Beddmenarch Bay, Rhoseniger beach and the Cefni estuary (also known as Malltreath). The latter site can have Spoonbill, Hen Harrier and Merlin additionally for a good visit with possibility of Crossbills in the nearby Newborough forest.
Hope this helps Dave.
Henry.

Hi Dave,

Have only just seen this post.

Anglesey is one of those places where you can just stick your head out of the window and birdwatch! Not whilst you are driving of course!! You will be totally spoilt for choice - there are so many good sites.

Now I know that you are absolutely guaranteed to win winner.gif your age group in the marathon sprint.gif you are running in - so safe in the knowledge that you will receive an extensive financial windfall! - the best book reading.gif you can buy is an absolutely terrific site guide "Best Birdwatching Sites in North Wales" by Alan Davies and Owen Roberts. This has about 20 sites on Anglesey itself and you can probably pick up a copy at the RSPB shop at RSPB Conwy which you will pass right by (junction 18 - I think!) as you drive along the A55 towards Anglesey. I think Alan used to be the head warden there before he went off on his quest to see the most birds in the world in one calender year. If you like you can borrow my copy, if you are able to meet up before you leave for the marathon.

Good luck (in the marathon sprint.gif and birding) - not that you will need it!biggrin.gif

Cheers,

Bill.

Hi all,
I'm competing in the Anglesey Marathon next Sunday 20th September. I'm hoping, aching limbs permitting,. to stay for a few days birding after. I was wondering which sites at this time of year on the Island would be worth a visit.
cheers Dave Phillips
