Large raptor being mobbed by crows over golf course today heading west at 1.20pm. Thought it was a buzzard at first but it had much slimmer wings which were also less rounded, with a distinctive v shape. As it headed away it resembled a large gull. It was hard to pick out colour against the sky but the underparts seemed quite mottled. I have tried identifying it and osprey keeps coming up, is this possible or is it way too late? Any other ideas?

cheers joey. It was a male blackcap but was puzzled because of the time of year. a first on the golf course for me :)

I've had blackcaps in Worsley during the winter in the past few years, including a female that regularly visited my garden last Christmas

Not impossible Dean. There are small numbers of Blackcap that over winter in the UK each year. Still good to see one though!!

goldcrest with mixed flock of tits and finches near machinery sheds. treecreeper in trees left of 7th fairway. also thought I saw a blackcap yesterday but is this pretty impossible at this time of year?

I've never seen it on the pond in the cow fields Gary, even though i've fished there many times in the last few years. I don't think there's too many places for it to perch up and fish from.

Kingfisher again on the pond near the 3rd green 2pm today, not seen it for a couple of days. It's probably travelling between the golf course ponds and the pond on the nearby cow fields. Also a flock of 10+ Fieldfare.

First Woodcock of the winter flushed from alongside the 2nd fairway 4pm today also 3 very vociferous Tawny Owls near to Chatsworth Road.

26th May.

Woodpigeon on a nest, Robin carrying food, fledged Blue Tits and Wrens seen. A pair of Mistle Thrush, a Kestrel and I was told by one of the course attendants, (many thanks to that man who kindly gave me a ride

across the course to my preferred destination on one of those buggies!), that young Bullfinches had been seen here recently.

hi everyone,first post ever from me.
I am a greenkeeper at worsley golf course.
two lapwings on the course at 12.30, a first for me on the course. only there for ten mins until sparrowhawk couldnt resist the newcomers.
a single snipe spotted three times since wednesday on the brook.
been plenty of activity since the snow has prevented any golfers disturbing the birds.
birds seen on a regular basis include;
robin, dunnock, wren, blackbird, song and mistle thrush, great, blue and l/t tits, gs woodpecker, moorhen, carrion crow, sparrowhawk, wood pigeon.
birds seen occasionally include;
kingfisher, kestrel, buzzard, pied wagtail, grey wagtail, jackdaw, chaffinch, collared dove, nuthatch, treecreeper, tawny owl, goldfinch.
may have missed some there, but would welcome anyone else posting sightings who walk through the course.
will report any other unusual ones of seen.

2 pairs of Sparrowhawks have succesfully fledged 2 youngsters each. They can be seen most days practicing their flying skills near to the nest sites.

A number of GSW nests occupied from previous years.
Haven't seen or heard any young Tawny Owls and unsure if any of the boxes are occupied.
This evening one of my dogs was paying particular interest to movement in bushes near to the 9th tee, came back a short time later to see a very young moorhen chick disappearing back into the same bushes. It would appear the adults have chosen to nest in trees or bushes some 20/30yrds away from the pond.

Surprisingly disturbed a Kingfisher from the golf course stream this evening. The bird was last seen flying towards the club house. I don't think it will stick around as the stream is far to shallow to fish in.

Had the good fortune to see 2 Tawny Owls mating in the trees near to Chatsworth rd at dusk today. On this subject, the staff at the golf club erected 6 or 7 Owl boxes 2 or 3 years ago. Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether they have had any success or whether the boxes are checked regularly.

Hi Gary
Keep an eye out for a Green sandpiper. I regularly saw one each winter at the same stream on the golf course each year between 2001-2006. I've not checked for the last couple of years but they may still turn up.

My 2 Border Terriers flushed 3 Snipe from the stream that runs through the middle of the course at 4pm. It's the first time for a few years that i've seen them on there, no doubt down to the cold spell. Also 15 or so Redwings in trees near to the pathway.
