A few afternoon highlights from Wellacre Country Park.
Buzzard 3 Sparrowhawk 1 female. Redwing 1...must get out earlier! Common Gull 1 1st W. Grey Wagtail 2 at ETW. Pied Wagtail 20+ at ETW. Jackdaw 26 etc.etc.etc.
Out at first light today - about 100 Redwing over and more in the bushes along the railway line towards the ship canal. Sparrowhawk nearby. Water Rail heard in JL reserve. 10 Ring Necked parakeet in the reserve yesterday.
Chiffchaff 2 singing plus 5. Goldcrest 4 RN Parakeet 1 Meadow Pipit 6 in field north of Jack Lane NR. Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Bullfinch 1 Greenfinch 2
Stott Drive to FlyAsh Hill via Dutton's Pond and return via Woodsend.
Wellacre Academy field:
Rook 20+ Jackdaw 10+
Dutton's Pond:
Moorhen 2 adults, 9 juveniles. Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Willow Tit 1 in hedge alongside houses, east of pond.
FlyAsh Hill:
Swift 2 Swallow 10+ Chiffchaff 5 Whitethroat 6 including juveniles. Cormorant 1 Bullfinch 1 Willow Tit 1 at top of rise of the north path. Treecreeper 1 same area as Willow Tit.
Late report for Sunday morning down at Irlam Locks.
House Sparrows 50+ down the end of Irlam Road. I'm also getting 25+ in the garden. Grey Wagtail 1 Kingfisher 1 Linnet 2 Sand Martin 20+ over the canal. Swallow 5+ as above. Grey Heron 2 GBB Gull 2Adults plus 2Juveniles. LBB Gull 3A plus 10J. Herring Gull 1A. BH Gull 150+ Mallard 25+ Moorhen 2 Mute Swan 2 Adults. Cormorant 1
Grey Wagtail 1 Dutton's Pond. Common Gull 1 adult near Woodsend Shops. House Martin 1 Woodsend Shops. Looks like just 1 nest on the go. Sand Martin 40+ Flixton ETW. Swallow 5+ ETW. Nuthatch 1 in garden. Water Rail 1 heard Jack Lane. Whitethroat 1 heard, the Hill. Chiffchaff 6 heard mainly, around the Hill. Bullfinch 1 male, the Hill. Goldfinch 10+ the Hill.
Appears to be just 1 active nest of House Martins at Woodsend shops above the hairdressers and adjoining units, amazingly where work has been carried out recently. 2 were seen entering the nest, despite recent disturbance.
A few from a Saturday afternoon wander to the ETW and Ship Canal.
Great Crested Grebe 2 adults just upstream, which seem to have failed but still displaying to each other. 1 adult downstream with a large juvenile. Cormorant 1 flying upstream. Oystercatcher 1 Grey Wagtail 1 male. Pied Wagtail 2 males. Mute Swan 2 adults. Coot 1 adult. Moorhen 2 Sand Martin 30+ Swallow 10+ Swift 2 BH Gull 60+ Starling 70+ etc.
FlyAsh Hill: Blackcap 7 singing. Whitethroat 10 singing. Garden Warbler 1 singing down from south west end of Hill. Willow Warbler 2 singing. Chiffchaff 3 singing. Sedge Warbler 1 seen in song flight, west edge of water. Reed Bunting 2 singing. Kestrel 1 male. Grey Heron 1 etc.
Jack Lane NR: Reed Bunting 3 singing. Reed Warbler 2 singing plus 3 seen. Whitethroat 1 seen.
Flixton ETW: Kingfisher 1 male perched next to old ferry landing stage. Buzzard 1 Kestrel 1 female. Grey Heron 1 Oystercatcher 2 Swallow 4 Sand Martin 30+ Starling 100+ Great Crested Grebe 2 Goldeneye 1 female preening on Irlam bank, downstream from locks. etc.
Same walk to the Hill and return via Jack Lane as May 5th.
Song Thrush 7 singing. Blackcap 13 singing. Chiffchaff 10 singing. Whitethroat 14 singing, 12 of which were around the Hill. Willow Warbler 3 heard from the Hill. Bullfinch 3 males. Treecreeper 2 heard at Dutton's Pond. Coot 2 adults with 3 young. Reed Bunting 1 singing from Hill and 2 singing at Jack Lane, Reed Warbler 1 singing from Hill and 3 singing at Jack Lane. Water Rail 1 heard at Jack Lane. Buzzard 2 Sparrowhawk 1 Goldcrest 2 singing on the Hill. Oystercatcher 1 heard towards the ETW. Jackdaw 10 etc.etc.etc.
Distant view of ETW gave Swallow numbers>Sand Martin>Swift>House Martin.
Plenty of banging at the Locks with installation of the new water-flow turbine or whatever it's called. Didn't seem to upset the hirundines.
Pair of Goldeneye below the locks at 8am. The male took off and flew downstream , the female tried to follow but didnt appear to be able to fly - the male returned after a couple of minutes.

Chifchaff 9 singing. Blackcap 4 singing. Willow Warbler 3 singing, heard from the Hill. Whitethroat 7 singing around the Hill. Goldcrest 1 singing on the Hill. Sparrowhawk 1 male over the Hill. Kestrel 1 male. Reed Warbler 2 singing Jack Lane NR. Swallow 3 from the Hill. Sand Martin 1 over Jack Lane NR.
Willow Tit 1 calling heard from the Hill at SJ 737 938, looking west and 1 seen singing at approx. SJ 738 939...the regular site on the Hill.
Sorry, it should be 732 but also more like 938. If you know the area, go down Dunster Drive and follow the track towards the farm. Past the farm with Jack Lane NR on your left up to a T-junction. Turn right and just a bit further along, either side of the track. If you park at Dutton's Pond, walk south towards the tunnel under the railway. If you go through the tunnel, take the first track off right up the hill and at the end of the trees a pair have been calling. If you don't go through the tunnel turn right along a track with the railway on your left. Keep going past the reed beds at Jack Lane NR and you come to the same T-junction as the other route. Continue on a little.
Nuthatch 1 calling in wood south edge of Wellacre Academy field.
Pond area:
Willow Warbler 2 singing. Chiffchaff 2 singing. Blackcap 2 singing plus 1 female. Goldcrest 1 Willow Tit 1 calling at SJ 744 941, west side of pond.
Hill:
Kestrel 1 male. Buzzard 2 over towards Wellacre Academy. Blackcap 1 singing. Chiffchaff 5 singing. Willow Warbler 1 calling. Chaffinch 1 singing. Greenfinch 2 singing Goldfinch 3 singing Linnet 1 Willow Tit 2 about 5 m apart calling to each other at SJ 738 938. Top of the north-most path down off the hill.
Plus another singing Chiffchaff and Blackcap, 3 Mistle Thrush and a Grey Heron on the walk back.
About 20 sand Martins back at the Mersey in Urmston, off Queens road. Last years nest holes all washed away. Glorious down there today with lots of people litter picking.
