No sign today of the Dipper at Mile Rd Bridge, so we decide to patrol the field on the left hand side, which runs back towards Urmston.

Grey Wagtail was expected find. Unlike the 9 Golden Eye, 20 Teal and Green Sandpiper.

But biggest surprise was a Shelduck which flew over us heading towards Carrington Moss..

Next week we are going to search search other field.

Phil,

I was down on Wellacre for a little on Saturday Morning 0900-0945 trying to watch our Josh playing football, the Lesser Black Backed was on Wellacre field then but was over the far side near the flats with approx 30/40 other gulls, could not make out anything else as was too busy chasing a little person whom didn't want to watch his brother.... note to self , leave baby at home and remember bins next time....lol...

An hour in the garden witnessed a massive influx of Redwings flying over South...well 2 actually.

Plus 3 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Linnets, 1 Siskin, 1 Sparrowhawk and a Buzzard.

Actually in the garden were 2 Goldcrests and 2 Coal Tits.  A total of 24 species in 1 hour, before I had to watch Bargain Hunt.

Sunday, August 16th.

A first for me round here, with 2 Nuthatches calling in trees along Irlam Road, in front of Wellacre College.
Also, a high-flying Raven, flying west yesterday.
30+ Rooks have been counted on Wellacre Park recently and a Jackdaw seen along Irlam Road.

A walk on Saturday to Jack Lane produced 6 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps and a Willow Warbler, along with a singing Coal Tit behind Stott Drive and 20+ Swallows and 10+ House Martins at the ETW.

Sadly probably not - we did see the pair on the locks with 2 chicks then a day or two later just one then just a single adult Oystercatcher with no sign of any young. The second adult was about but not associating with the first one to any great extent.

Environment Agency have called me back and said they have had a look and confirmed that the loss of fish was due to very low oxygen levels, rather than anything more sinister. A common problem on that particular stretch of water apparently.

Doubtless the Herons were simply cashing in on the easy prey.
