Feeders at Binn Green were alive with birds late am.

Loads of Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Coal Tits (never seen so many), 6 Long-tailed Tit, Blue and Great Tit.

A large mixed flock at Binn Green car park this morning, mainly goldfinch, chaffinch and greenfinch but also included about 20 siskin, a couple of redpoll, at least 2 brambling, 1 treecreeper and a GS woodpecker.

28/6/10 09.30 - 14.45 Circular walk around Dove Stone Resr. / Yeoman Hey Resr. / Greenfield Resr. then up to Chew Resr and back to Dove Stone Resr. car park.

1 Cuckoo heard calling from behind Sailing Club as I arrived.

3 Blackcaps singing and 2 females seen around Binn Green, plenty of Long Tailed Tits and Blue Tits calling along with Jay, Treecreeper, RLP and recently fledged Robins.

1 Common Sandpiper on Dove Stone Resr.
3 Common Sandpiper on Yeoman Hey Resr.
1 Common Sandpiper on Greenfield Resr.

A total of 5 Adults and 2 Juv's Pied Wagtails
A total of 7 Adults and 5 Juv's Grey Wagtails

1 Wheatear seen on the wall at the Northside of Greenfield Resr.

1 Kestrel, c40 Meadow Pipits, 1 female Chaffinch and 1 Wren along Chew Valley

1 Song Thrush, 3 Blackbirds, 3 Pheasants, 4 Goldfinch, 4 Greenfinch and 4 Willow Warblers around Kinder Intake.

went climbing at wimberry boulders this evening. As I walked past the sailing club a Cuckoo was calling from Chew Plantation, i.e. the woodland below wimberry crag/ indian's head. A little while later whilst sat atop a boulder, the cuckoo starting calling again quite close and eventually was seen in flight with a second cuckoo, possibly a young bird. Both birds eventually flew into the area around the stream on the edge of plantation and one sat on a small boulder for quite some time. Both birds were also being harassed by meadow pipits - surrogate parent moving the parasitic host parent and yound on??

also saw a raven and treecreeper.

Hi Dave. No names on the large A-Z map either, but the footpath is shown as Intake Lane.

Not much to add to the usual stuff we saw this a.m.

Dipper 3 (1 singing, the other 2 just arguing fight.gif all unringed)

2nd Buzzard soaring over the junction of Mossely Road & Oldham Road

9+ crossbill in plantation opposite fletchers mill up the hill, not sure exact name of plantation, will look when i get to car park. Cant see them now.

Had a long 5 hour walk up the hills on top of Dovestones today. Lots of snow on the tops, but very few birds except for the grouse. Must have seen 30 birds or more today biggrin.gif, the most I've seen up there, but then you can hardly miss them standing out brown on white. A lone meadow pipit was near the reservoir, with 40+ Mallard, 3 Canada Geese and the usual titmice about in the woods.

The peregrines must be enjoying the riches of the coast, as no sign of them today, or Ravens. I kept my eyes and ears out for Crossbills in amoungst the conifers too, but no sign unfortunately.

On the non-bird side there were plenty of Mountain Hare tracks up there today, but in all the snow I couldn't see any of them no.gif, though did find some droppingsdisbelief.gif.

Don't know where you got the "bouquet" from, Dave (a florists?), Juliana Berners' Book of St. Albans has "a nide" or "a nye of pheasants".

I've never been able to tell whether a group of Grouse were related or not - they all seem to have a family resemblance smile.gifsmile.gif

A nice flock of 12 Red Grouse flying against the snow at the back of Dovestones. Nothing else though.

5th December.

8.20 am to 9.45 am.

A short visit hoping for either Crossbill or Brambling......or being greedy both!....ended up with neither!!mad.gif

2 Coal Tit, 1 Treecreeper, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Fieldfare and 1 Jay. Parties of 11 Long-tailed Tit and 6 Bullfinch. A Grey Wagtail was trying to feed at the side of Yeoman Hey Reservoir and was seen being bullied three times away from the waters edge by a Robin.

Whilst walking along the front of one of the plantations here - 2 female walkers came along with three very alert, inquisitive and lively Springer Spaniels - with noses down sniff.gif (the dogs not the walkers!wink.gif) they went into the plantation and out flew a Pheasant.....quickly followed by a Woodcock! On getting home I noticed that neither of these 2 latter species have been recorded for the 2007 - 2011 BTO Atlas project for this tetrad SE00C (Pots and Pans). Pleased to be able to add both - especially so the Woodcock. nod.gif

The water level on Dovestones Res. is high but still seems pretty low on Yeoman Hey Reservoir.

Stopped off briefly at Grotton on the way home where a Mistle Thrush was heard singing.

Binn Green (2 Nov, 11.00 - 12 45)

A female Crossbill (1) loosely associated with a mixed finch flock of predominately Chaffinch (c35) which also contained Brambling (3-4), Bullfinch (3), Greenfinch (1), Goldfinch (1)

Peregrine overflew Dovestones Res.

early Sunday morning (18.10.09)

No Crossbills to be seen. One very vocal Great Spotted 'pecker, 4 very confiding Goldcrests. Dipper and a solitary white duck on Yeoman Hey resr.

On my return to Binn Green car park there were at least two dozen Pheasants (I'm sure they weren't there when I arrived!). Most were males and most of them were of the very dark green variety - very tame and/or very stupid - obviously recent releases.

very quiet at Binn Green - family party of Coal Tits.

Dove Stone Clough - 1 Dipper and 2 Grey Wagtails (no sign of breeding success)

Ashway Gap picnic site - lots of noisy young Goldfinches giving their parents a hard time.

back across dam - 1 juvenile Stonechat.

Probably back to a blackcap. I had a possible tree pipit on the way up to Chew reservoir but I went up today and heard nothing. John.

Quick look round on Saturday morning - found the Garden Warbler near Binn Green but nothing doing at Ashway Gap. The Binn Green bird seemed to be holding down the same territory as last year's Wood Warbler - what can we expect ther next year?

Spotted flycatcher, stonechat, redpoll, green woodpecker and little owl this evening. Two singing garden warblers yesterday (only one seen) , one at Ashway Gap the other at Binn Green. But neither could be found in a brief visit today . A pair of red legged partridge on the hill overlooking Binn Green.

Good to see that the Stonechat numbers are holding up despite our fears after this winter's cold snap. Garden Warbler is a good find for this site too. Shame about the lack of Flycatchers though.

Garden Warbler singing at the picnic site at Ashway Gap at 10 am. At least three pairs of Stonechat around. Green Woodpecker and GS Woodpecker, Nuthatch but no flycatchers.

Short eared owl today at 14.30
This was on the moor above the reservoir on the opposite side of the road from the sandwich van
If this is out of our area I apologise
Good close up views but not quite as good as the twelve (12) that i saw last week on the Dee estuary at Dalton marsh all at the same time, it took five of us to count them.
not bad 4 short eared and a peregrine in one scope view.
Nearly as good as the following day when 23 were reported smile.gif
