The Nikon ED50 is a lovely little telescope and with the 27x wide angle eye piece it is optically superb. However, there is a well documented problem with its tripod mount.
As it has a plastic body Nikon use a metal helicoil (like a tightly coiled spring) screwed into the body. Your tripod bush then screws into this metal coil.
If fairly light pressure is applied to the coil it pulls out from the telescope body. This is why it is recommended never to carry an ED50 by a shoulder strap, with the tripod dangling.
This problem happened to me recently. My ED50 was mounted onto a Cullman monopod but locked in the down position My son tried to move the scope through 90 degrees to look through it and, hey presto, pulled out the coil.
There is an easy fix though - but Ill post that on the Optic Repairs thread.
