Thursday 20th October tram trip to Pomona and walk back to Castlefield along the Bridgewater Canal.

Pomona - 2x Goosander (juveniles), 7x Mistle Thrush, 10x Starling, 2x Cormorant, 11x Long Tailed Tit, Common Gull,

50x Black Headed Gull, 6x Lesser Black Backed Gull, Woodpigeon.

Bridgewater Canal - 2x Blackbird, 5x Goldfinch, Great Tit, 3x Canada Goose, Pied Wagtail.

Castlefield Canal Basin - 9x Mallard, 2x Canada Goose, Magpie, 7x Feral Pigeon, Grey Wagtail (heard).

An enjoyable walk in the Autumn sunshine.

My wife was taking a group of University of Manchester students around Salford Quays and she saw the drake Goldeneye there. This was on Friday 23rd September so his survival instincts are still going strong smile

Trafford wharf

Male goldeneye, moulting, it's the resident drake as it still has half a left wing. Not seen him for a long time, I thought the worst had happened to him.

12,40pm : Single Ring-necked parakeet flying around Exchange Quay ... Can't tell wether it's a wild one or an escaped captive, as its flying into all the windows trying to perch.

Pomona - great Spring birding with 10 male Common Whitethroats and 8 male Willow Warblers on territory, displaying Lapwing, Sparrowhawk, 1 Swallow, a pair of Bullfinch and Sand Martins buzzing around in large numbers, I'm surprised more birders don't visit the site, especially on days like this!

A tram stop and walk around the area this afternoon ;

Castlefield - Old Trafford  (along the Bridgewater Canal) = Mute Swan x2, Canada Geese, Mallards, Greenfinch, Grey Wagtail x2, Sand Martin x2,Willow Warbler, Magpie, Black Headed Gull, Woodpigeon, Feral Pigeons.

Trafford Swing Bridge - Media City (along the Ship Canal) - Cormorant x2, Great Northern Diver, Herring Gull x3, Lesser black backed Gulls, Coot x2, Mute Swan x21, Black Headed Gulls, Carrion Crow x2, Magpie, Goldfinch, Long Tailed Tit, Canada Geese.

Great to see the Diver again, in Central Bay, diving twice during sighting.

Superb walk and trams.
