Lately, a notable increase in birds coming to the feeders particularly finches some of which [Goldfinch and Greenfinch] in double figures. Regular visits by a pair of Bullfinches and also a pair of Nuthatches. Average species count for the week is 20. Sunflower hearts a particularly popular.
After lamenting loss of song thrush from garden (see yesterday), today I had two in at the same time, a garden first! Jay was probably next best. Still no sign of siskins and redpolls this year, a very strange event. Same goes for nuthatch. Something's wrong out there.
After posting yesterday a Robin and Dunnock appeared then a charm of Goldfinch thirty plus feeding in a large silver birch.
This morning 08.20 the Blackcap appeared.
Mealworm and sunflower heart feeders are being filled twice per day now with the large numbers of birds visiting. There are also a fat balls and a general seed feeder along with a good supply of fresh water.
Sad news, as last week my neighbour had her sycamore removed taking out what was effectively a viewing platform for passing birds so they could see what was on the menu before descending into my garden. During the mayhem, the resident song thrush and brambling 'disappeared' and things definitely went quiet. However, the last couple of days has seen a different brambling arrive, but at the front of the house only. Collared doves seem to appreciate the openness now on offer, with 4 down today. Let's see what the colder weather brings.
Male Blackcap still around today. Not been able to report on him recently. He was feeding heavily on the mealworms last Friday, chomped 17 without moving off the feeder. He then returned several times consuming anything between 1 and 4 more.
Other birds today;
Long tailed tits at least two but others around just not sighted.
Bullfinch has visited my Radcliffe garden lately, also I have heard 2 ravens passing over but couldn't see them. This afternoon I was sat down in the garden for a few minutes and I hadn't realised that my grey wagtail has appeared (i usually hear him arrive). He got my attention by landing almost right next to me of about 10ft!! Ta!

Male has now joined female bullfinch in my Bury garden. Flock of long- tailed tits makes several visits each day. I am sure the rooks are beginning to get restless.
Male Blackcap this morning, observed for an hour returning to mealworms. Held its own with the House Sparrows, he would eat three worms fly away return a few minutes later, in total eight visits made that I actually saw.
A flock of up to 21 Redpolls have been around neighbour's gardens for a few days. Yesterday some of them visited my garden feeders (Hazel Grove) and one pale individual showed many characteristics of Common Redpoll. I only managed a single photo before they spooked and I am hoping for better before submitting a rarity report.
A fieldfare was in my neighbour's sycamore (which overhangs my garden) yesterday afternoon, probably only second ever 'grounded' individual in 33 years here. The brambling continues to visit nearly daily and the song thrush appears to be resident, so some interest. More to come?
A Redpoll flock numbering at least 24 for the past two days, feeding on alder and birch. Got my scope on them and alighted on a seemingly paler individual moments before the flock was spooked. Hopefully they will return.
Cheers John.

Only one fieldfare in my Bury garden, instead of the many, this season. It was examining the feeders until a raucous jay chased it off. As a consequence, there are many apples still on the crabtree and blackbirds and squirrels are benefitting therefrom.
The best day so far this Winter, and almost as good as it gets. New arrivals were 2 siskins and a female bullfinch, the brambling continues to appear daily, scarcities like song thrush and starling (2) put in appearances, and there were 30+ goldfinches. All in all, this small garden attracted 19 species today (actually alighted within its confines), easily beating the number of passerines I saw in Etherow Country (car) Park during the week. Best stay at home I say.
6 lesser redpolls were circling my Radcliffe garden. I haven't yet seen them on my feeders, but I'm now expecting to see them there at any time now (except during the hours of darkness).

Since my last post, my Grey wagtail has done several visits every day in my Radcliffe garden- he only stays for 5 minutes at each visit.
Also noteworthy is 2 song thrushes were seen in the immediate area and a mistle thrush was seen in the tree at our front. My blackbirds have now increased to 4, I wonder if I will beat last winters record of round 13 on 2nd March 2018 Last year it was the apples I dished out and the numbers peaked close to the time of the Beast from the East.
Ta!

There are a number of redwings & fieldfare around my old trafford garden & neighbouring gardens this morning, most at one point was 12 redwings & 9 fieldfares. 2 redwings were in my holly bush. At least 4 blackbirds also.
Fieldfare (possibly a second) in the trees directly behind my Chorlton back garden this morning; flew off calling over the house in a south-westerly direction.
House sparrow on my feeder yesterday. Both garden firsts for me.
Unusual pigeon behaviour - one of the thirteen or so we often get has managed to learn the art of hovering such that it can feed from the hanging seed feeder. It's far to large to perch on the ledges, but by just about hovering with 1 leg on a perch it can eat for 30+ seconds at a time. I'm not sure how efficient such effort is in terms of rewards. Does scare all the sparrows off!
Am making a bigger effort than ever in the garden this Winter as I do not think venturing out too often is an exciting prospect any more. Today was the first time I've put any 'fat' products out for maybe ten years, and the first garden starling for about two months soon arrived. I expect more! The brambling is coming more regularly and was one of 13 or 14 species seen today. I expect things to 'hot-up' tomorrow with the promised weather. Maybe nuthatch, which has had its quietest start to a Winter yet, might turn up, or the first blackcap. I'll be watching.
Smashing pair of great spotted woodpeckers in my Bury garden right now.At first on the feeders, then chasing each other amongst the tree branches. Could be the pair that bred last season or their offspring.
First day back in the country after a trip to Peru and found first ever brambling in 33rd winter in this house (Romiley), so a nice welcome home. Have only had one (perhaps two) previously in neighbours garden tree, but this was actually down on the ground feeding with chaffinches. This afternoon was not conducive to photography as you might have noticed!!
My grey wagtail from last winter has returned! He has been landing on the roof and itching to fly down whilst I was in the garden, the only hitch is it doubt I will be able to tempt him to be as regular as last winter because of live mini mealworms supply issues since July which I used all last winter! Also a freindly female Chaffinch has returned and because I've been spending more time in the garden- some of my other regulars are slowly getting bolder. Also noteworthy; Canada geese flew extremely low over and possibly just missed scraping the roof by a foot or two!!!

Amusing and interesting to watch a couple of carrion crows, in my Bury garden, dismantling a squirrel drey. Wonder if they hoped for some kits? They gave up after some minutes.
3 Brambling in garden this morning, 2 females and 1 male. Getting rather hopeful they hang around for a bit of sunlight so I can get the camera out. Managed to grab a couple of shots this afternoon, crap light and very slow shutter speed but didn't turn out too bad.

Have been watching garden carefully recently for any Bramblings as have had a lot of chaffinches, as well as plenty of others. Patience rewarded this morning, female Brambling feeding on sunflower hearts. 9 days after one seen last year. Fingers crossed it will stay around and bring some others in. May even get the camera out on tripod and have a go at some pics later. Prestwich area.
Update- Now 2 bramblings feeding beneath sunflower feeders.

Three jays were down when I returned from Audenshaw at midday- a nice colourful sight. Yesterday there were 16 goldfinches and 5 chaffinches, the first gathering of any numbers this second Winter period. Have had three coal tits which is a garden 'high' for them. One has disappeared, presumed 'seen-off'.
Song thrush in my Harwood, Bolton, garden today. It was picked up by my camera trap that's monitoring our hedgehog house. The images are from a short video of the bird.
