In our Stockport garden the female Blackcap is  still a regular every day since our last post, she has now been joined by a male most of this week. Blackbird numbers are still in double figures just (10) plus the usuals.

Anybody know Where have all the goldfinches have gone ?
Up to about two weeks ago 30ish , every day . Now very few . Very concerned about my local sparrowhawk who no longer has his buffet . I have seen him make five fruitless forays , this afternoon . Hope he can feed elsewhere , or else

As weather is pants thought I'd spend an hour watching garden feeders instead of going out. Another Tree Sparrow put in a couple appearances and my first Siskin of the winter as well on the sunflower hearts. This morning there were 4 Pheasant in the garden, 3 females and a single male On the feeders generally still plenty of common birds plus a cracking male Great Spotted Woodpecker on the fat balls.

Our Stockport garden has seen just one female Blackcap over the last two weeks on a daily basis, Blackbird numbers are steady at 10 but a count on Tuesday 11th had 12. Two Redwings have been sat in a conifer and 2 Goldfinch were feeding in one of the Lilac trees on Wednesday morning. Other usuals on a daily basis.

Grey Wagtail in my Davyhulme garden was a bit of a surprise this morning.

January has seen a steady increase in Greenfinch (max 24), with the usual flock of circa 16 Goldfinch and 3 Chaffinch. A Siskin visited one day.

Since our last post on the 14th Jan, two female Blackcaps have been visiting every day in our Stockport garden and on the 15th a male joined them for about fifteen minutes but has not been sighted since.

All our other usuals have been hanging around which has also attracted a rather splendid male Sparrowhawk.

Since our last post a week ago the only real change is that a female Blackcap has been visiting every day and staying around most of the time in our Stockport garden, she has also had a bit of a bathe sadly no sign of the male or other female.

Maintaining my firm belief that the ONLY weather that guarantees my access to the Moss is that which includes RAIN...this bout of Ice filled days keeping me firmly at home

here are a few sightings from the 'safety of the Garden'...Birds observed in and or over the Garden

2 Blue Tit

9 Chaffinch

12 Starling

1 Blackbird

15 Jackdaw

38 Goldfinch

3 Carrion Crow

3 Feral Pigeon

9 Woodpigeon

7 Greenfinch

1 Collared Dove

1 Dunnock

1 Magpie

1 Snipe...flying south

100125 1000-1130...Minus 6C

List much the same as yesterday (less the Snipe) but with additions of

3 Redwing

110125 1000-1130...Minus 5C

Again list mostly comprising of 090125 Sightings...adding

2 House Sparrow

1 Song Thrush

Both of these species having been commonplace in my lifetime as Garden Regulars but tempered with the sobering knowledge that now these are Rarities....and still those in power continue to ignore what most of us wildlife observers KNOW that NATURE is in dire straits...and those powerful people still understand not that if nature is failing then as we are but simply a part of nature are next in line....I believe that King Midas found to his cost that Gold (untold development riches) is not a foodstuff....

A redwing, which alighted briefly in the acer outside my front window near dusk, was a total surprise in a Winter where they are not present hereabouts. It then flew towards our cotoneaster, which still has a few small berries, but is not visible from where I was stood. Also, this morning, a pair of siskin for the first time this Winter. Yesterday, 2 redpoll were present. Have probably only had redwing in my garden 2-3 times in 38+ years.

The first Siskin of this Winter was on the back garden feeders Christmas Day morning. Today, we were back to two redpoll (I think the loner that has been visiting is a different bird), and seven greenfinches was a mood booster.
