RE: Pennington Flash, Long Eared Owls

Steve,

there are undoubtably still roosts at Pennington (there is no reason why the birds aren't still there) but their traditional roosts of years ago and the excellent viewing of them have now gone, due in quite a large part to the abuse of birders during that period cry.gif

That said they have recently been seen on and off over the past few years from New Hide, which is along the main path (causeway) from the visitor centre towards the canal. The birds (usually only one or two) have been seen most recently (earlier this year) out from the left of the hide amongst the hawthorns and bushes on the island (the big square looking peice of land) although they are of course very difficult to se due to their plumage, which is most likely why they aren't reported so often, because they aren't often looked for! They used to also be seen at the very back of the pool on the left hand side from New Hide looking straight out from the hide. Best of all, both areas are inaccessable so there can be no disturbance smile.gif

Does anybody know if the long eared owls still roost at Pennington, been told there have a winter roost there. I did go down there the other week but no joy after spending hours serching the trees from most of the hides.
