RE: The Grove

Spotted from our Front window this lunchtime and had been about most of the morning.
A pair of GSW in obvious courtship bobbing and dancing about on branches and chasing each other about The Grove and the bushes and trees of Williamm Wroe from 16th Green to back of 17th tee.

Yellow Wagtail Steve? They are unheard of in the UK in winter, so this would be especially intruiging if it is?

Although Grey is more likely a Yellow Wagtail wintered in Cornwall from 2006-2008 but not this winter, possibly an eastern race bird but in winter plumage too hard to tell.

Almost unheard of in the UK apart from a few very rare occurences of apparent wintering birds (two in the past 8 years) seen in early February

Sorry for the late sightings, but normally update from phone, bit cream crackered so had to make do with work computer.

Saturday am: 20 Goldfinches on feeders and Chicken pen in our Garden along with 10 long tailed tits and 15 Great Tits. Have moved one feeder to front of house so could be these have always been around but just not round the back.

Sunday 1300: 65 Goldfinches, by far the largest number we have ever had in and around our house, rapidly running low on Niger seed....

You both might want to add these sightings to the Pink-footed Goose thread, it looks like there was plenty of movement today.

Hi Steve,

The pink feet flew over Christie Hospital in Withington at 0910 still going South East. In fact it prompted me to join the forum (after lurking for about a year) just to post this.

Highlights over the last weekend.

1 m Bullfinch on William Roe Boating Lake ( golf course) Watched for about 30 mins right in front of house.

Also

APPROX 3000 gulls seem to have taken up residence on Flixton fields and William Roe, just wish I knew the difference between them all. Seem to be Lesser Black Back, Black Headed and there are definately 5 Greater Black Backed...

Finally

1 male Siskin still feeding daily....

Todays Highlights 2-1-08

3 Siskins 2f 1m in tree opposite
1 Tree Creeper in front garden
1 Goldcrest in back garden

1 Sparrowhawk being mobbed by the local Carrion gang.... 1st real time I have spotted him, have seen brief glimpses as he tends to chase the local Tit and Finch brigades across William Wroe...

Long Tails now numbering 20 plus as are the Blue tits
Goldfinches now numbering 20-30 depending on time of day, not bad considering we started seeing these this summer and there was a family of 6 on Niger seeds everyday..

Cheers
Steve
