Lunchtime today: Whooper Swan in channel to hide pool Pied Wagtails Mallards + various hybrid Gulls, various 7 Cormorants 70 Lapwings 4 Canada geese (2 one side of the lake, 2 the other) + 30 Canada geese in a nearby field with the white domestic goose that's been helping shepherd the young geese this summer Robin Chaffinch Goldfinch Dunnock Wren Great Tit Starling Magpie Crow Jackdaw Wood Pigeon 10+ Teal 2 Wigeon Male + female Goosander (he was looking smart with his dark red bill and salmon-pink flush) Great Crested Grebe Heron

Male goosander, not sure if juv or adult coming out of eclipse, just now, swimming across lake towards the white pub. (Saw male and female teal at the hide pond last week)

Juv. Mediterranean Gull this morning Also at least 4 Whinchat, 1 Stonechat, 3 Willow Warblers and 1 Chiffchaff Yesterday (4/9) single Spotted Flycatcher and a Lesser Whitethroat.

A Greenshank flew through west calling this morning. Also today a fem/imm Redstart, 1 Whitethroat and 3 Buzzard No sign of the Great White Egret since Saturday evening

8/8 Long-staying Great White Egret still present

Yesterday (7/8) also a single Spotted Flycatcher and Redstart at Shaw Moss, and Andrew Huyton also had a Hobby here

6/8 - also 1 Little Egret and a Spotted Flycatcher

Great Egret showing well this afternoon, commuting between the nature reserve and the shoreline between the Pavilion Cafe and Rakewood Road, also Little Egret, juvenile Mediterranean Gull, Little Grebe, 120 Lapwings, 2 Oystercatchers and a Ring-necked Parakeet - a superb days birding!

Great White Egret again present today (and it was also here yesterday)

Other recent sightings were a Little Egret and a Dunlin on Thursday (28th), a drake Common Scoter on Friday (29th) and Ian Kimber had a juv. Mediterranean Gull and a Dunlin yesterday (30th)

From your description Natalie, I'd probably suggest Goldeneye, with the one with the white under the eye being a male.

Well, I didn't get a photo and I think I'm usually OK with IDing a tufted duck. But they were slightly larger and one had a white circle under it's eye. It was also diving for some considerable time. But I didn't spend enough time looking tbh!

Hi Natalie,

Im new to this and on a recent visit to Old Moor I got excited at first glance thinking Id seen a scoter, but turned out to be female pochard. Could this be what you saw?

Hi Natalie,
dont worry, a simple description of basic plumage details would probably clear this up in this case. Neither a m/f Tufted Duck look like a m/f Common Scoter.
Or did you take a photo?

Went for a stroll with a friend and to see if I could find the red throated diver!! Was not successful but saw two (what I thought were) tufted ducks but on closer inspection...I would want to ID as common scoter. But my confidence was low...any thoughts?!

The wigeon and the pintail still viewable from the hide. The wigeon is hanging round with the teal on the pond while the pintail is on the open water by the gulls.

The long-staying sub-adult Yellow-legged Gull present on the nature reserve viewable from Rakewood Road at 4pm, also the eclipse drake Pintail viewable from the hide, showing very well, plus 2 Wigeon and 39 Teal

Sub-adult Yellow-legged Gull on the green canoes moored with the boats between the dam wall and the old sailing club - found at 8:30am and then flew onto the nature reserve around 9:20am where it was present on the marshy area until 2:30pm when it flew off - photos courtesy of Mark Shuttleworth

Also 1 Yellow Wagtail, c100 Lapwings, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Mute Swans, 1 Great Crested Grebe
