A crisp cold morning today but surprisingly busy with dog walkers, etc.

one Green Woodpecker (feeding on the ground in the deer park)
probably two Great Spotted Woodpecker (drumming in different areas)
one Raven

All the pools fully frozen.
Lots of Black-headed Gull loafing on the ice and a "pair" of Mute Swan

Mainly out for my exercise this morning. A couple of hours round the park.

2 x Green woodpecker really active. Flying from tree to tree and feeding.

1 x great spotted woodpecker. My first of the year but still a little fleeting...mainly because I got distracted by someone asking me what I was looking at biggrin

Had a wander around the deer park and local area today. The large finch flock was still present in the sunflower field but very mobile so it was hard to get accurate counts of each species.

c.200 Chaffinch
7 Brambling (probably more)
c.10 Greenfinch
c.25 Goldfinch
1 Lesser Redpoll
3 Reed Bunting
80 Lapwing in the field opposite, across Oldfield Lane

Deer Park:
1 Green Woodpecker
1 Great Spotted Woodpecker
11 Gadwall - Smithy Pool
7 Tufted Duck - Smithy Pool
2 Ring-necked Parakeets
Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Blue Tit, Great Tit plus other common species in good numbers across the park

I had a look in the dead sunflower seed field behind little heath farm just like Anne did this morning, I also had a c150 finches they included....
Majority chaffinch
Several greenfinches
2 brambling
3 tree sparrows
5 linnets
1 yellowhammer
2 reed bunting
No siskin
Could only find 1 stock dove amongst the many woodpigeon.
Green woodpecker heard on the golf course.

Large -about 150 - flock of finches in the sunflower field behind Little Heath Farm accessible by public footpath.  Mostly chaffinch, but at least 10 Siskin and one brambling.  Chaotic parking in the village yesterday.

Couple of hours walking round the park from 10 this morning.

Highlights and firsts for me, since starting to spot properly!

1 x jay as I was looking to park

1 x female green woodpecker - observed for about 20 minutes

2 x treecreepers

And 

1 x skylark - however, this was a slight struggle for me to identify!

An evening walk yesterday in Dunham Park produced excellent views of Green Woodpecker's;
A pair were feeding a well grown juvenile on the ground close to the path from Charcoal Road along the eastern edge of the park.
In the treeless area between Old Man Pool and the Obelisk an adult was feeding a well grown juvenile. A further bird flew overhead towards the Obelisk.
A juvenile was feeding alone on the west edge of Smithy Pool.
The park was very quite mid-evening and the birds allowed good views.

Late report for yesterday afternoon Sunday 21st - called by the river/flats at Bollington Mill. Between the flats and the "Swan with Two Nicks" pub a very vocal Ring-necked Parakeet flitting about, several Swallows and most pleasing a group of 10 or so House Martins which seem to be nesting in the eaves of the flats. Not seen/present last year so good to see them back.

I was a bit limited to where I could go due to a large area of the park cordoned off ready for a deer cull tomorrow 6am !!

Eight Grey Herons reported around the small pond on the opposite side of the Bollin from the oxbows - preparing to colonise the heronry at a guess.

Short visit this afternoon - Bollington flats and along R.Bollin

Minimum of 130 Pied Wagtails feeding in fields at Bollington flats.
Also 100+ Redwing feeding in the same fields.
120+ Canada Geese
4 Ring-necked Parakeets over and landed in trees just inside the NT park.

Wednesday, 18th December 2019. 10:00 - 12:30 hrs.

Walk from Dunham Village - around perimeter of Dunham Park - Little Bollington (past 'Swan with two nicks' pub) - walk along Bridgewater Canal towpath back to Dunham village.

Highlight was a Green Woodpecker in a tree by side of Bridgewater Canal just before bridge leading off to Dunham village.

On a quick visit to the park late this morning watched several of the Parakeets flitting between the beech trees at the bottom of the ride down from the obelisk. They were very noisy but difficult to get a decent count as they spent most of the time high in the canopies of the trees.

A Green Sandpiper was in the ditch in the field next to the park wall by the wheelhouse.

The Parakeets were putting on quite a show just opposite the Hall, not sure exactly how many but prob well into double figures; eating beech mast (there won't be any for the grey squirrels! ) and the little fruiting things on the lime trees - never seen anything eat those before.

around 9am this morning we saw around 12 parakeets. The first time we have seen them and the first one we saw just upon entering the park so it was a big thrill for us to see and hear such exotic looking birds flying around good old Dunham Massey!

Also Grey Heron, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Tufted Duck, Gadwall x2, rutting deer.. no woodpeckers for us but all in all a pretty unexpectedly spectacular visit!

Had a walk around the park this morning looking for the Spotted Flycatchers in lots of "very public places" including areas where I have seen and reported the species in previous years, such as around Island pool. No luck however - they may have moved on by now but a little more information for such a big area would be helpful Carl biggrin.

Also as Ann noted, no hirundines were seen around the stables, this will be the second consecutive year that Swallow nesting has not taken place in the clock tower.

On a positive note, two pairs of Grey Herons look to have set up home, away from the main heronry, in the trees on the northern bank of the moat. I've not seen them there in past years.

We missed the Spotted Flycatcher this afternoon, but did see two juvenile Kingfishers sat on the stone edging of Old Mans Pool. Also several Banded Demoiselles in a corner of Island Pool. Surprisingly, not a single hirundine around the stables.

Had a stroll up the river Bollin away from the Bollington flats this afternoon. I was surprised to see a minimum of eight Mandarins (4 each male and female, possibly more but a bit tricky to count) on and around the small tree lined pond, on the other side of the river, in the field opposite the oxbows. Have seen them around that pond previously but never so many.

The Grey Herons look ready to colonise the heronry. I counted six birds in the surrounding trees at one point, making a bit of a din.

Kingfisher - Moat Pool, caught a fish.
No sign of the Firecrest near the Orangery, 1 Goldcrest calling, and oddly a Great Tit sounded to be impersonating it or another!
2 Robins were paired up, rather nice though i suspect the cold weather forecast in the next few days may lead to them going it alone for a bit longer.

Not sure how i managed to miss the Firecrest report, as i usually keep an eye on this thread; i happened to be standing around in the area of the Orangery/Bark House/Well House today!  As it happens i did have a crest - not the Firecrest but what i thought was a Goldcrest giving a single, quiet contact call. It got me thinking about the chance of a Firecrest too, ironically. If i'd checked the thread beforehand i may have waited around a bit longer, but nonetheless there was a Redpoll over the gardens and nearby a Kingfisher on the Moat Pool sheltering from the wind.

Little Egret in the ditch coming out of the park towards the Bollin this afternoon, i think a patch first for me and possibly my first in Greater Manchester. Took my time -  i can remember when the first one was reported from Sale Water Park!

2 ring necked parakeets over visitor centre yesterday around 3 pm. Plenty of old trees in park as suitable nest sites so may well stick around.

Kingfisher on the Moat Pool - at the back, left hand side in a willow bush next to a birch with a lot of golden foliage. Otherwise quiet; Meadow Pipit over south; nice to hear my first Blackbird of the "season" singing fairly quietly and not for particularly long, in the mild weather.

An unusually high number of Canada Geese grazing on the meadow beside the stream over Bollington Gate stile today.  Approximately 160 birds there late afternoon.

A walk along the Bollin this afternoon produced two Grey Wagtails on the weir upstream of the footbridge near the Bollington flats and two Green Woodpeckers feeding on the ground at the oxbows where there was also a small group of Goldfinches. Several Swallows and two Buzzards were also seen. No sign of the recently reported female Garganey however.

Had a walk along the Bollin late this afternoon, away from the flats at Bollington and noticed a lot of wing flapping in a small copse on the opposite side of the river from the oxbows.  It turned out to be a startled looking, apparently very young common Buzzard seemingly making its first journey into the big wide world biggrin

Super walk this afternoon in hot sunshine along the R.Bollin from the Bridgewater Canal bridge on Dunham Rd, down to Bollington Flats then down the riverside path to the A56 and back again.

Sightings:
Family of Mandarin ducks on the river - female plus 5 well grown young.
3 almost full grown Goosander on the river.
Female Mallard plus 4 young which included 1 white duckling
2 Grey Wagtail
6 Pied Wagtail
Lots of Swallow
6 House Martin
2 Sand Martin
3 Blackcap
2 Chiffchaff singing
1 Nuthatch heard
1 Great Spotted Woodpecker
Green Woodpecker heard calling from inside the deer park
