Male Stonechat still present this morning along with a female for company. Clearly yesterday's Kestrel caught something but not Stonechat. Increase in numbers of Meadow Pipit and Skylark evident this morning.
Male Stonechat still present mid afternoon when I think it became prey to a Kestrel that caught something in the same vicinity , it ate whatever it was with it's back to me in a distant tree. I didn't see the Stonechat again although it could have moved on through the undergrowth.
also 1 Chiffchaff 3 Grey Partridge 7 Snipe Fieldfare & Redwing present in small numbers
10.30-11.45 1 Greenshank heard only due to the fog Pink footed Geese flew over in fog 3 Cetti's Warbler singing one of which took me by surprise suddenly bursting into song probably 5ft away in cover almost deafening me 3 Chiffchaff Didn't come across any expected Redwing just 3 Mistle Thrush.
08.45 - 11.00 Fairly quiet 1 Lesser Redpoll 5 Snipe Only 4 Chiffchaff two of which were singing from adjacent trees to each other Meadow Pipit numbers increasing

Plenty of Swift and House Martin. 5 pairs probably more Reed Bunting. 1 Willow Tit 1 Buzzard 3 pairs of Linnet 1 Kingfisher flew over the path behind me, seen by another birder, sorry didn't ask your name.
08.30 - 10.30 After a number of attempts managed to see and photograph one of the Garden Warbler albeit a poor photo took 45 minutes though. Other things of note this morning 1 Greenshank 2 new Sedge Warbler Plus usuals
a.m walk 1 Cuckoo calling 3 Sedge Warbler 4 Grasshopper Warbler 1 Redshank 1 Goldcrest (don't see them here that often) 3 Cetti's Warbler 2 seen briefly but not quick enough to get a photo
Late morning, walk didn't venture very far because of all the quads and bikes Only thing of note was a Garden Warbler singing from edge of ruck adjacent to Nevison's Flash (different area to the one the other day) .
a.m highlights Single Cuckoo Single Swift 7 Grasshopper Warbler 4 Cetti's Warbler Whitethroat not counted but in double figures now along with Blackcap
2 Redshank 100+ Sand Martin (still no Swallow) 5 Grasshopper Warbler 1 Sedge Warbler 7 Reed Warbler 4 Whitethroat Grey Heron very keen on some ducklings but mother did enough to keep hold of her young
2 Sedge Warbler. 1 Whitethroat. 2 Reed Warbler. 4 Grasshopper Warbler reeling . 4 Cetti's Warbler (have decided that there is not a 5th bird on site just that the 4th is very mobile since it's arrival the other week, today it was singing opposite side of road to no where showing briefly before heading back to choke pond). A very agile Willow Warbler flycatching from one tree catching the fly before landing in another some distance away. 2 Raven very vocal. Female Kestrel was constantly flying from metal fencing by the allotment to the ground eating perhaps beetles? not sure what and back for a good 5 mins or so before being disturbed by a passer-by. Still not seen any Swallows yet, this time last year they were on site virtually 2 weeks ago (read this week there is a high mortality rate this year in Greece?)
Late morning early afternoon walk 1 Reed Warbler chatting away. 2 Raven. Blackcap /Willow Warbler /Chiffchaff all present numbers not recorded. Was stood at bottom of a ruck @1pmish, watching a Buzzard on edge the ruck, listening to slight commotion coming from Gulls. As the Buzzard moved away I turned round to look at the Gulls, disappearing over rucks in a WNW direction I had a very brief glimpse of a possible White Stork. I tried to grab a quick snapshot but missed. Would be interesting to hear if one is reported in the NW in the near future.
Today's highlights Fairly quiet Single Willow Warbler singing still in the same area as the the other day. 1 male Blackcap The fourth Cetti's Warbler back by New Water singing, so the bird yesterday singing by Choke Pond could possibly be a fifth bird? 5 Buzzard Seems to be a good number of Meadow Pipit on site at the minute. Heard singles of Sand Martin passing over a couple of times but didn't locate any.
07.30-11.15 1 Male Blackcap 3 Sand Martin 20+ Chiffchaff The three resident Cetti's Warbler have now been joined by a fourth one singing from the back of the New Water
08.00 - 10.30 Highlights 2 Chiffchaff 3 Cetti's Warbler 2 Greylag Geese Plenty of Skylark and Reed Bunting singing making it Spring like in the sunshine
No flocks of Starling passing through Pennington Flash heading towards the roost here at all this evening and no murmuration seen either. Is the roost still active?
A flock of maybe a thousand or so flew over Lightshaw Hall Flash on Sunday evening during the storm, came from Pennington / Bickershaw direction, heading towards Abram. Maybe heading for a Wigan Flashes roost?
No flocks of Starling passing through Pennington Flash heading towards the roost here at all this evening and no murmuration seen either. Is the roost still active?
For the past couple of weeks while watching the gull roost at Pennington Flash, flocks of Starlings have been seen moving in to the Bickershaw area predominantly from the east, in flocks raining from a hundred or so to several hundred. The resultant flock can be seen even from the south side of Pennington and a rough estimate own a few occasions (including this evening) has been around 5000 birds but maybe up to 7000.
Either way, its a great local spectacle and well worth a look.
