Cetti's Warbler singing from the North end of Fir Tree Flash this morning as a posed to the ditch between South end of Fir Tree Flash and New Water last week
1 Hobby E @ 10.20 single Swift, Whitethroat & Blackcap roughly equal numbers of Willow Warbler @ Chiffchaff small numbers of Swallow @ House Martin 3 Buzzard 3 Kestrel
Out and about again this morning before the rain came in - it was beautiful at Bickershaw about 8am!
Notable 4 Kestrels - 3 in the air at once, almost certainly at least 1 juvenile probably 2. 4th one was heard only near Diggle Flash. 3 common Buzzard 1 likely a juv as calling almost constantly. 2 Great Crested Grebe with well grown juveniles on Diggle Flash. 2 Little Grebe 3 Gadwall looking like 2 male coming out of eclipse 2 Raven passed overhead Diggle Flash. 2 Swift over Fir Tree Flash.
Other species were as expected - low numbers seen in the breezy conditions.
Morning walk - 2 male Cuckoos and single Cettis Warbler in song; 30+ House Martins gathering mud at New Water; Reed Bunting with jingly notes in song off Road to Nowhere!
Garden Warbler in fine song just off-site on track from Crankwood towards Park Lane. Whitethroat the most numerous songster (15+ over southern half alone).
Cetti's Warbler present this evening, also, something you don't see very often if at all, a Grasshopper Warbler reeling in the complete open whilst perched on a fence post. Swift, House Martin and Sand Martin flying around as well.
1 Short-eared Owl - flew low and fast with Jackdaw in pursuit over New Water @ 18.30 as I was scanning water, and continued NE towards Fir Tree Flash and beyond. I might of expected one in March but was surprised to see one at end of April. 2 Grasshopper Warbler reeling 2 Whitethroat Sand Martin
17.15-18.30 As far as ruck behind Nevison Flash from Common Lane entrance. 1 Garden Warbler 2 Common Tern 1 Grasshopper Warbler 1 Whitethroat 3 Buzzard
About 10.30am - was out on a group walk with some friends, without my camera, when we spotted 3 Buzzards giving grief to a very fine Osprey over the W end of Diggle Flash and the Stock Pond. It made a few circuits not that far above our heads, almost dived into the Stock Pond for a fish, thought better of it, and flew off to the north. At the same time, there was a Peregrine high overhead, and a Kestrel hunting over the N bank of Diggle Flash.
A magical birding moment for sure, and the Osprey a site first for me!
1 Cetti's Warbler - flew low across reeds in ditch either side of loud burst of song. 2 Little ringed Plover 2 Grasshopper Warbler 3 Reed Warbler 3 Snipe
Evening walk, migration has slowed down since the last post Single Reed Warbler still singing from the same ditch, apart from a few more Willow Warblers not much else happening.
1 Hobby flew over top rucks @ 11.30ish ( very early! beating last years 16/04 arrival by some distance). 1 Willow Warbler 750+ Sand Martin North ( probably missed quite a few as well)
