RE: DOFFCOCKER Terns 24/6/07

Hi Dean,

At the moment I am unsure as to when the adult was ringed. If it is a ''local'' bird then I presume it was ringed at Pennington Flash. When I get details back from the BTO, I will let you know.

Were there a lot more breeding Common Terns at Pennington Flash years ago? I'm not sure how many have bred there this year. But perhaps the breeding Black Headed Gulls at Pennington have pushed the terns onto other locations? Doffcocker, Rumworth and the Wigan Flashes as examples.

It will be interesting to see where the Doffcocker colour ringed tern chicks go. I think last year one was seen at Pennington and another at Seafourth Docks.

Cheers
Kane

Hi Kane, couldn't read any details on the ring. Have you any idea when the adults where ringed?

It's great to see these birds doing well. Watched one of the youngsters fishing, caught fish ok but then more often than not dropped it again.

Cheers Dean.

Hi Dean,
It was me who was asking. There is at least 3 of the adults ringed at doffcocker, I have manage to read the metal ring of one of them (Sent to the BTO) and I have manage to read parts of the other two rings.

I thought it would have been difficult to read the adults rings but when they are sitting on the edge of the raft, the wind and water turns the raft around - allowing me to see different angles of the ring!

They have had a good year but when we went to ring there where a few addled eggs on the raft. All the young have been colour ringed.

Cheers Kane

The Common Terns young are now flying around, which made them difficult to count. At least 5 or 6 maybe more coming and going to the rafts. There was one very young still on one of the rafts. Looks like a good year which is great news.

Someone asked on an earlier thread, which i can't find, about rings on the adult birds.
One adult bird deffinitely had a silver ring on it's left leg.

Only saw 2 young Grebes
1 Tufted duck
2 sedge warblers
1 Reed Warbler
1 singing Chiff chaff
A few Blk Hd Gulls with Juvs
Reed Bunting
Swift

Dean.
