Late morning and early afternoon on Little Woolden Moss produced:
2 Red Kites, appeared from the east circling fairly high over the Croxdens area then drifted slowly west over Astley Road and along the fields just south of the railway at which point they dropped to tree top level and slowly circled, seemingly actively hunting. They continued to drift west though and were eventually lost to view.
Undoubtably the same birds Pete Hines (and Tony O'Mahony) had only a hour or so early over the Chorlton area as one of the birds displayed the characteristic wing moult from Pete's images on the Chorlton thread. Some dreadful phonescoped images attached, taken over half a mile range and frankly, I'm surprised I managed anything at all (note in a couple of images, Seddon Plant Hire can be seen way in the distance, which is along Plodder Lane in Bolton!)!
Hi John you were in the right place, I saw it from the gate on the turbine side looking south towards the burnt out hide it flew from around there towards the far end, I think it's just pot luck I'm afraid.
Saw the hen harrier at 11.15 a.m. across the site (from near the nature reserve car park) in the middle distance. Stayed in view hunting for about 2 minutes. Lucky really as I'd spent two hours there without trace and was just about to leave. Also on Little Woolden there were 6+ mistle thrushes, 1 yellowhammer, kestrel, buzzard and up to 5 yellow wagtails inc. a pair together.
Hi Steve and a John, many thanks for the info. I was there between 8.30 and around 11am. The only person I saw had two dogs and was not a birder. Should I turn left and walk along the gravel path towards the burnt out bird hide which is what I did.
I did not go any further than this but then returned back to go to the other side of the moss where the wind turbine is.
Walk from Barton Moss - along Twelve Yards Road between Chat Moss and Irlam Moss - Croxden Peat Works area - past Mosslands Farm - Little Woolden Moss as far as Western Pool (along southern gravel path) - and return.
Nice to chat to Dave Steel (at about 13:30 hrs) who had seen Female Hen Harrier earlier towards Northern Bank of Little Woolden Moss. Also, spoke to another birder (at about 15:00 hrs) who thought he saw Hen Harrier to south of Little Woolden Moss (from gravel path on southern side) being chased off by Lapwing. So - no luck for me - but here are my other sightings in total for the whole walk:
Kestrel x 2 sightings Buzzard x 1 Yellow Wagtail x 3 White Wagtail x 2 Pied Wagtail x 3 Ringed Plover x 2 Wigeon x 2 Teal x 1 Yellowhammer x 3 Gadwall x 2 Greenfinch x 2 Canada Geese: 10 Adults and at least 21 Goslings ALL TOGETHER (being led from field to west of Western pool at Little Woolden Moss in to the pool itself and then into cover towards the middle of the Moss!) Hi John, not sure if it was you I met on Weds, I had a ginger dog with me, I saw the Hen Harrier working up from the pools near the entrance on the south edge of the reserve heading towards the Glazebrook end it was very low and dropped frequently for several minutes. Not sure if this is its usual pattern though.
I tried on Wednesday for the the Hen Harrier and although I had a possible sighting I was unhappy with my distant views (the bird I saw was near to the wind turbine but quickly went down) so I did not count it. If I approach along Twelve Yards road to little wooden moss can anyone help with where it's being seen. When I reach the path around the moss should i turn right or should I run left.
Any advise would be appreciated as I may give it another go tomorrow.

Red Kite drifted slowly west over farmland bordering the southern edge of the moss at 6.15pm today. Quail heard calling in barley field to north of the moss, from information board along perimeter path at 6.50pm today.
Hi thanks, to be honest I can't recall it's back, my first reaction was Oh it's a Tufted Duck but then it's neck was extended and I've never seen a Tufted Duck like that and although it was a fair distance, it was longer and larger than usual. But as I looked down at my phone to check id it flew off.
Hopefully it will return and someone more experienced can say either way.
Not sure if anyone can confirm this, I think I saw a male Scaup on Little Woolden Moss today it was on its own but flew off before I could get a better view, it appeared larger and with a longer neck than a Tufted Duck and I didn't see the tuft, however it was quite distant.
Hi John, just a thought to help your identification. Greater Scaup I think can be tricky when they are asleep, on rippling water and at distance in poor light. But you noticed this ones neck so Im assuming it was upright (swimming?). Did you not notice the back on the bird? It wouldve been a noticeable pale grey. Cheers
