Barton Moss / Chat Moss border: Three Spotted Flycatcher. Thanks to Steve N for the tip-off. Also seen on way back to car parked near Barton Moss motorway bridge: Treecreeper, Coal Tit, Long Tailed Tits, Buzzards and Kestrel.

Little Woolden Moss Nature Reserve

Afternoon visit (Between heavy showers.)

Amazingly there were no birds at all on the remnants of the shallow pools at the Eastern side of the reserve.

Elsewhere there was a nice mix of raptors, 1 Hobby, 1 (possibly 2) Sparrowhawks, 2 Kestrels and 1 Buzzard.

There were several Ravens around the moss, including 1 that had a nasty aerial scrap with a Sparrowhawk.

The hawk simply was not going to be intimidated by the big corvid, both made vicious attacks on the other, in

the end the raptor moved away, but it put up a memorable fight.

I also saw how quickly a hawker dragonfly can move when a Hobby appears over the birches.

There were huge numbers of black corvids over the moss.

There was several flocks of passerines moving through the birches along the South side of the moss,

they moved quickly and nervously through the trees, disappearing in the foliage as soon they landed,

I only managed to ID 1 Willow Warbler amongst them, it appeared that the raptors were making the small

birds especially nervous.

Afternoon visit

Little Woolden Moss LWTNR:-

Only a shallow pool and wet muddy area covering an area the size of a couple of tennis courts remain,

and that is towards the eastern end of the site. Otherwise all the other wetland pools appear to have dried up.

On the remaining pool were 2 Green Sandpipers, 1 Greenshank and what appeared to be a family group

of 7 Pied Wagtails. The wagtails made a quick exit when a Kestrel landed on a post alongside the pool.

Other birds seen around the reserve were 1 Reed Bunting, a pair of Jays and family groups of

Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Long-Tailed Tit.

It was good to see the female Marsh Harrier, with the broken foot/protruding leg whilst in flight, this evening over the west end of Little Woolden Moss LWTNR. My first positive sighting of this individual this year. Also 5 juvenile Stonechat including a male that appears almost entirely black at present. Quite a number of Willow Warbler practicing subsongs along the edges of the reserve.

On analysis of better photos and further consultation with a couple of other mossland regulars, it seems that 2-3 of the juvenile birds appear to be Stonechats! Confusion seems to have come from some of the birds appearing to show a hint of a pale supercilium and being perhaps a little paler in colour than usual. They are quite mobile and can be a bit distant at times, as well as frequently dropping out of view in the vegetation, so not always easy to get prolonged clear views.

So, it seems were back to 4 (possibly 5) Whinchat after all!
