Male whinchat seen briefly on the track towards Astley Moss late afternoon today as I returned to my car after my reptile survey on the Moss, a real surprise. In the fenced pond area, plenty of willow warbler singing, whitethroat heard briefly but not viewed. Stock doves, red-legged partridge, lapwing and oystercatcher seen on the fields west of Rindle Woods.

observations at the time onto a 'rarities form'..

A visit to see the green-winged teal in the morning also revealed little egret, a male wheatear, a pair of grey partridge, at least one male yellowhammer, and my first blackcaps (1-2) and willow warblers (5-6) for the year. Don't ask me where these were seen as I was semi-lost most of the time!

Green winged teal still at Croxdens. 3 calling Golden plover over Little Woolden Moss. First Swallow and first sand Martin of the year for me. Saw about 20 different butterfly species and could positively ID 2 of them. Got to get better at that!

I saw the GW Teal briefly shortly after I arrived at 7am, but it went behind distant vegetation and in the 3 hours I hung around, I didn't see it again. At least 3 Willow Warblers, 4 Skylark, Little Egret and several Linnets around too.

Also, is the area where it has been seen classed as Irlam Moss or Chat Moss? I couldn't quite work it out.

Gave it 2 hours today but couldn't locate the G W Teal, only about 9 Teal visible in and out of the grass and behind islands, lots of Willow Warbler and 1 Blackcap.
