Chiffchaff around the area I watch off Knott / Crime Lanes, outside Ashton.
Also goldcrest, bullfinch, 250 jackdaw over and teal, as well as shoveler (heading in the general direction of Crime Lake; another patch first, after the parakeets) and goosander (heading in the other direction) both over.
I have noticed plenty of activity from Pied Wagtails right by where I live in recent weeks. They are often flying around above the junction of Lane End Road and Burnage Lane [South Manchester for those who don't know it]. However today I saw four together feeding on the ground on the other side of the Kingsway and I happened to have my bins on me, allowing me to establish that there was an adult and 3 immature birds with some residual pale lemon yellow on their ear coverts. This tells me that they might well have bred on one of the flat roofs around the road junction, having dispersed from the river which is about a mile away as the crow flies. Or the wagtail in fact...
Anyway, it was nice if odd to watch the birds hopping about on the ground with loads of traffic all around them. Clearly there is plenty of food and I guess it is warm for roosting somewhere around here, maybe related to the big Tesco with 24 hour heating and light.
I was collecting frozen seafood again from Sykes for our depot and decided to take a tacho break. A good decision because I ended up with prolonged views of the bird fairly close up, patrolling the area and then perched up on a van looking for fish scraps, especially favouring the 'bigfish littlefish' unit.
I love my tacho breaks.

Smithfield Market off Ashton Old Rd, Openshaw. Whilst collecting frozen seafood from Sykes I noticed a large majestic Gull and I think it looks good for an adult Yellow-legged Gull. If the identification turns out to be incorrect then I will edit this accordingly, if correct then a County Rarity form will be completed and sent to Ian, again!
I was speaking to the groundsmen at Sale Golf Club (near J6 of the M60) who reported seeing a bird with jesses a couple of weeks ago. From the description (size, white rump) it sound like Harris Hawk. Could well be the same bird seen by Chris and Chris. regards Chris
Fairly certain it was the Harris hawk came across low while I was driving between J27 and J26 beside the M60 today -hadn't seen it was around- the unfamiliar large raptor silhouette wasn't good for my driving, though started to ring bells when the white rear end showed.

Harris Hawk low down on tree by junction 27 of the M60 a2 15.30. Best viewed from where Brinnington Road meets Carrington Road. Tree is on the bank of the motorway.
Readgate Recycling, Gorton. Early afternoon today.
- No sign of the juvenile Iceland Gull but of note... - 5 adult Great Black-backed Gulls - 2 adult Herring Gulls ...1 with yellow legs and ...1 with a tiny black beady eye and long bill
I've had individuals here showing these traits before.
Mixed flock of mainly redwing (20+), plus a few mistle thrush, flitting between trees across Princess Road next to MMU Birley Campus and Epping Walk footbridge (no Joy Division song title puns sorry, could soon get out of control). Also a couple of pied wagtails bobbing around the deserted MMU car park.
I had a general scout around the area. The fishing lodges off Elton Vale road had a dozen plus goosanders and when I got to the Castle Street area in Bolton, I had a very passing quick scout for waxwings but couldn't see any there and it was very foggy at the time- plenty of redwings though. Finally, back in Radcliffe, a kingfisher was seen along the reeds on the canal. That's that from me. Thanks.

Same Hulme tree as previous post below - a single fieldfare in among the redwings, blackbirds and mistle thrushes. Some impressive aerial acrobatics going on now the easier-to-reach berries are gone.
3 x Redwings in berry tree next to Epping Walk (Joy Division) Footbridge in Hulme (tree is now in grounds of MMU's new campus). Been checking most days for waxwings, but not looking likely now that most of the berries have gone, though it's always nice to see Redwings in among the more regular mistle thrush and blackbirds gradually relieving the tree of its fruit.
Gull numbers increasing nicely here during last few weeks and in the last week or so I've noticed a couple of ringed birds, incidentally the first Gulls I've seen with rings at this site.
The 1st is a Lesser Black-backed Gull with a metal ring on 1 leg and a dark ring on the other but the number is just too obscured or worn, the ringed Gull yesterday however does have a background.
The info for anyone interested from Mike Jackson (BTO)
- Herring Gull, this years juv - 1st winter. - caught with a cannon net and rung at Harewood Whin Landfill near York... - on Friday 4th November (4 days ago) - this is the 1st report since it was rung
Late news: I was given a report of a Great Crested Grebe that was found on playing fields in Cadishead last week. It was rescued and released successfully on the M/cr Ship Canal.
Burleigh Rd. Stretford, street tree feeders. - Sparrowhawk returned at 2.45pm . This time the feeders were occupied by about 15 goldfinch, which scattered but the sparrowhawk singled one out and a short chase followed , with the goldfinch twisting and turning to eventually (whilst still calling) evade it's persuer . The defeated sparrowhawk retired to the birch tree again, before setting off after the Chester rd. "Kebab shop(s)" pigeons c50. I'm not sure about any outcome as the birds involved all dissappeard behind the rooftops and chimney stacks of Gorse Hill. But great to watch (unless you're a golfinch or ferral pigeon).

Burleigh Rd. Stretford, Street tree feeders. - Sparrowhawk flew past the vacant feeders (as I'd just disturbed all the finches when I filled them, then gave the pavement a good sweeping because of the dropped seed getting wet and crushed under foot becoming slippy ). The unlucky Sparrowhawk landed in a nearby Birch tree but didn't linger.
3 Redwing flocks seen on commute to work this am. c.30 south over Mossley common, c.60 south east near Worsley garden centre and 42 (sat stationary so could count!) south over washway road.
Burleigh Rd. Stretford, street tree feeders - Young Goldfinch still begging food off parents in the tree canopy, with other young already on the feeders taking their own seed , together with two Greenfinch (10-15 birds in total ) . Also a lightning visit by a Sparrowhawk (which didn't manage a kill) , leaving to circle high above Chester rd.
Burleigh Rd. street tree feeders, Stretford. Standing on the doorstep after filling the feeders at 11.15am this morning I noticed the "clean-up crew" of feral pigeons sat on my roof suddenly departed with a loud clap of communal wings, followed by a swift evacuation of the feeders by c10 goldfinch....20 seconds later a Sparrowhawk glided leisurely past the feeders and landed 20m away in a Beech tree , stayed a moment then glided back past, on the other side of the Beech hedge adjacent the feeders , again landing but in one of the tall Birch trees 20 m away. It stayed 30 seconds or more looking over its shoulder (could have been at me maybe) before it left. A great sight in this built up area . Less than 5 minutes later everything was back to normal, ie goldfinches on feeders, pigeons on the pavement WATCHING a cat trying to sneak up on them ....as if .
Pinmill Brow/Fairfield Street early afternoon today- one Buzzard (mobbed by a Crow for a bit before being left to it's own devices). Not seen one so close to the City Centre before.
Burleigh Rd, Stretford, street tree feeders - 3 young goldfinch begging and chasing adults around tree eventually getting to the feeders and being joined by a mobile flock c25 of other goldfinches mainly juveniles who don't stay long but keep returning after a while . Not seen any Greenfinch over the last few days .
Approx 5.00 - 5.30pm. Quick stop at Redgate Recycling in Gorton on way back from a full day delivering in town.
Plenty of usual large Gulls around but one of particular interest just happened to land right near where I was parked. Taking everything into consideration I initially thought Yellow-legged Gull. But I'm always cautious now with Gulls so I wasn't prepared to stick my neck on the line and call it. Maybe I should've done! Many thanks to Ian and hopefully no issues with the Rarity Committee's decision as and when, it looks like a 3rd summer Yellow-legged Gull.
