Cettis singing and showing off this morning. also site firstsite visit to dover basin, 35+teal 3 redshank BT godwit 4 oystercatchers 2 heron. KEEP BIRDING
Coppice,Oldham 13.45 p.m. Immature (male?) peregrine just south of Oldham town centre. The bird appeared from over the old High Point Hotel heading towards Wereth Hall Park before turning and dropping away on the wind towards Chadderton- about 5 mins before my neighbour let out his tumbler pigeons for an exercise flight! That might have been an interesting contest if either of the cock pigeons had started throwing their double somersaults just as the peregrine struck
Watched a Blue Tit taking nesting material into a nest box in my garden this afternoon, Spring appears to be springing Cheers Ian
It certainly does. Up at my local res. today doing various surveys. Robins singing everywhere, lots of stuff in pairs, at least 1 female mallard possibly on eggs and 60 lapwing overhead heading up onto the higher fields and moors. I'll be interested to see how many birds there are down in Manchester from now on
We know it as Gale Brook Plantation, if you look in the history of the "Horwich Moors" Postings back to September/October, you will see that we had this question answered by Judith I think. Crossbills were reported there before, but Simon and I visited it a few times but didnt see any. Walker Fold Woods was more fruitful as you probably know. Cheers Alan
PS Simon was startled by a tramp deep in the wood reading a newspaper, he wasnt still there was he ?
Gale Brook Wood - not yet on the recording form but just type it in and leave the grid ref blank - colour it red so it will stand out for us. We'll do the rest. The reason is twofold: 1) we are currently revising the database 2)the site has only come to our notice in 2007, so will get put on automatically when I enter up sightings in the 2007 daybook later on this winter.

Anthony Phelps tells me a pair of Peregrines has taken up residence at the CIS building, where he works. Plenty of courtship and food taken up to the roof. I have asked the CIS to activate the camera in the box that was put up there when the solar panelling was done (it's on the N side of the tower, near the top - a panel was left out and a box inserted.

best place for the Peregrines at the moment seems to be the CIS tower. There were two yesterday morning, either displaying or just having fun flying around and hanging on the wind.
a kingfisher flew past my ear not more than an arms length away from me whilst i was waiting outside the uni's MIB building on princess street yesterday. was actually scanning the skies for the peregrines, but not seen them the last couple of times whilst in the city centre...
Withington 07:50 this morning 500+ BH Gulls heading west, flying very low over the rooftops about 5 abreast - probably heading to Hough End playing fields ??
There has been a constant 'stream' of thousands of Bl-h Gulls flying east over the centre of Chorlton during the last hour or two before dusk, over the past few days (at least 19th).

Doing my Mallards & Moorhens (sorry, Webs) survey at Strinesdale reses pm. Quite except for the wind, but a nice bonus in the form of a peregrine.1st brief appearance heralded by a very distinct call from the local corvids then a better view as it flew east (into the wind!) along the line of Huddersfield road, hopefully to a favorite nesting site. A roving tick for my tetrad.
found on belvedere road, ashton. within meters of my garden. it had jessies on it, ringed etc. after keeping it in the bath over night hes apparently taken it to a local falconer on heath road whos going to find the owner.
town centre Peregrine flew up Raven street in manchester todaywith a pigeon.
11 mute swans 43 Bh gulls 3 cormorant on Pomona strand at dinner also flush 2 small waders of waste ground in front of adamson house but was unable to get anything on them poss dunlin
1Buzzard above the shell station on the E. Lancs A580 just before the Higher Green, Astley turn off ( coming from Manc ) flying south (left) about 14.35. Wasn't sure if it was worth a mention ?

I've just returned home from the funeral of Richard Burnett R.I.P. A Stretford birder who found last years Ring-necked Duck on the River Mersey, sadly died of cancer on Xmas Eve. A top guy who will be sorely missed. Much birding banter at the funeral - even the service.
As well todays PFG sighting Tony O'Mahony had a Woodcock this morning near Ashton-on-Mersey ETW at Kickety Brook, Stretford SJ790920
A couple of people saw a Kingfisher at Chorlton Brook at Chorlton Park on their way to the funeral.
Tony even had his bins with him - though no Parakeets over the Southern Cemetary Crematorium.

31/12/07 1 Peregrine flying over Horrock's Fold, Bolton this afternoon. 1 Barn Owl near the Belmont Road/ Scout Road Junction at dusk. Several pellets also found nearby.
It would be really helpful if all Bolton birders could keep an eye open for any town centre Peregrines, and report them here or to me, so we have ammunition to get a box installed on the town hall.

Interesting, Richard. I was in Bolton town centre fri pm. I saw what i thought was a Peregrine fly into the Parish Church tower. Couldn't find where it landed, it was going dark. Couldn't make a possitive id,no bins.
Robins robins and robins loads of the little blighters today 25 in total with 13 dunnocks 9 blackbirds 4 wrens can you tell I was doing my BTO bit today
You will have to put two and two together Judith as I am not allowed to put news out for this private site, but looked like a classic fall all over the site extra blackbirds dunnocks, and wrens also, plus a number of willow tits in the area. going reed watching again this weekend keep birding
had a flock of robins this morning yes a flock 17 in one place then search of area revealed at least 35, never seen so many blooming robins, it was a first
Chiffchaff found whilst doing my timed tedrad for the bird atlas. As well as the usual suspects I saw nearly 100 siskin in 5 different flocks, 4 brambling, 2 dipper, grey wag and g.s.woodpecker.
If any New Years Day listers want the location, we could come to some arrangement. On the down side, as I was walking back home, I saw a goosander flying overhead-then realised if I was sat at home, it would have been visible from my front room window. Missed a garden tick. -- Edited by riggers at 09:46, 2007-12-13
Graham Jones tells me he counted 127 Pied Wagtails in a roost at Snipe Retail Park tonight. I think this is the one on the Ashton Moss development near A-u-L.

130 Starlings went to roost in Leylandii conifers next to ASDA's car park in Bury town centre at 1610 tonight - people might moan about Leylandii but they're great for roosting birds!

Spotted Flycatcher along Longworth Lane, by Dunscar Golf Club, Bolton. (whilst looking for Wood Warbler, of which neither sight nor sound - but I could have been in the wrong area ? )
