Since the swans legally belong to HM the Queen, I think the culprit should be tried for treason and hung (by some part of his anatomy)!

The adult male Swan, ring no ZZ4838 was ringed as an adult at Martin Mere in 2006.

A (belated) more accurate report from the Trafford Metro

How sad to hear this news, its about time there was some restriction on the jet skis they think they own the water. How many times have we seen them racing around without regards for anything, how many walks have been ruined by them ,it comes as no surprise reallyno.gif

I heard some late news today that the adult male and a cygnet Mute Swan were killed by a jet ski recently. The M.E.N. reports the incident as occurring on Tuesday 30th July. Apparently the police are inviolved.

A mid-day visit to a very quiet Broad Ees Dole.
1 Common Sandpiper
8 Heron
3 Shoveller
2 Little Grebe
2 Mallards

Also
1 Mink in inflow channel behind Jackson's Boat

Sad to see the "improvement" works to the riverbank between Barfoot Bridge and Jackson's Boat. No doubt sand martin nesting holes will have been obliterated. Perhaps time for a mink proof artificial nesting bank to be built.

First ever visit to Sale Water Park this morning and found:-

12-16 Swallows, 6-8 Sand Martins and 1 House Martin - they were all flying around together making counting quite tricky but it was good to get my first Martins of the year - the Sands were expected, the House was a nice surprise.

Sale WP on 24th March:

M/F pair Shoveler and M/F pair Wigeon in flooded fields by the Mersey (nothing but Mallards on the Mersey itself).

Jay in the tall poplar trees by the Mersey

2 pairs Gadwall, 3 pairs + 1 solo male Shoveler, 1 pair Teal, 3M 2F Tufted Duck, 1 solo male Goosander, sundry Mallards and Canada Geese at Broad Ees Dole

I've noticed the cormorant have taken to sitting on the lamposts on the motorway rather than the pylons on the side of the lake this week.

Ian , the staff at the visitors centre is a good start, as for a eastern hide, they need a fireproof one, so you will just have to take cover under a brolly.
