RE: WIGAN FLASHES

Reply from bto ,Hi David We can rarely process ring recoveries when only the colour ring is found. There are a number of reasons for this, sometimes it can be difficult to determine what species the ring was from. Although I think we can be reasonable confident this time - you will not receive further details. I suspect that the ring is from a Mute Swan, but please correct me if the ring size does not make sense! The bird was ringed as a juvenile on 26/09/2016 at Vulcan village, Warrington (SJ5893). It was then seen via it's colour ring on 29/05/2017 at Ince-in-Makerfield, Wigan (SD6003). The last time it was recorded on 24/07/2017 was at Abram, Wigan (SD6000) it was presumably found in an unsuitable area and was moved to a canal by a member of public! Colour rings are occasionally lost, particularly on Swans, as they can spend rather a lot of time around hard sufaces - especially in urban areas. It may be that the bird is still alive? Many thanks for taking the time to report the ring to us. Best wishes, Kev Leighton BTO colour ringing

Re willow tit with leg bands, the bird was ringed as part of a scheme in Washington Tyne and Wear

Interesting, I've read papers suggesting that Willow Tit are reluctant to fly across an open space of a few hundred metres between decent scrub or woodland habitat, but this one has crossed the Pennines!

Which is the point of ringing ultimately...
