Apparently still present but viewing difficult due to distance, size of bird, aggressive locals (other birds I mean!), heat haze, position of sun, number of people in the hide and length of vegetation on the spit. Otherwise fine!
Temmincks Stint on the spit viewable from far side off Ramsdales Bay looking back towards the spit. Still present at 9.20pm. The 2 Black Terns were still over the flash but seemed to disappear st about 9.00pm 1 Cettis Warbler heard. 1 Dunlin
A breathtaking dawn chorus at Pennington Flash today, with at least nine species of warbler including:
Garden warbler 1 singing western end
Cetti's warbler 4 singing (Sorrowcow, western end, 2 Ramsadales)
Sedge warbler (3+ singing western end)
Whitethroat 5+ singing
There's a short video of the singing garden warbler on my blog if anybody is interested. Also a video of the glossy ibis last week. Follow the link at the bottom of the post.
Also today
Wigeon 1 drake in the centre of the flash
Common sandpiper 1
Common tern 7 (one looked a bit Arctic tern like but it never came close enough for me to be sure with just binoculars).
No sign between 7.20 and 8pm in a quick look round most areas of the reserve but all hides closed so not that easy to check. Single common Sandpiper, at least 5 common tern and good numbers of swift.
Highlights from yesterday evening: 3 common tern 1 cuckoo (Tom Edmondson) - did not call but flew over the water into trees on the far side from hide 2 lesser whitethroat Plus usuals
Common Tern 10 Common Sandpiper 2 White Wagtail 2 Garden Warbler 1 seen singing just along from Tom Edmondson hide. Sparrowhawk 1 Swift 100+ Whitethroat 1 singing. Cetti's Warbler 1 singing. Reed/Willow Warblers Blackcaps/Chiffchaffs. etc.etc.etc.
"I was calling from bushes beyond that on the right, and flew across and back over the road favouring the hawthorn bushes."
This made me laugh Paul. You were calling from the bushes, then you flew across the road into the Hawthorn bushes. You've put some effort in to see that Lesser Whitethroat.
This morning from 8am at the W end before the rain set in:
2 Cetti's Warblers 2 possibly 3 Sedge Warblers 1 Garden Warbler (mobile, very vocal, frequenting trees either side of the small path from the W Car Park to the Flash, about 2/3 along the path) 2 Common Whitethroat 2 Willow Warblers Several Blackcap
I re-found Bill Harrison's Lesser Whitethroat from 24th, which was in the area where Bill found it - a bit up the road towards Lowton, past the tip entrance, past Hey Brook and the bus stop, and on the right there's a United Utilities installation. I was calling from bushes beyond that on the right, and flew across and back over the road favouring the hawthorn bushes. Easy to pick up the call when there was a lull in the traffic! It didn't stop still enough for a photo.
Main Flash 9.30am onwards in steady rain: Horrocks Hide 5 Common Sandpipers active up and down the left side of the spit 1 Black Tailed Godwit at the end of the spit and 4 Common Tern including one with dark bill. 1 Kingfisher Several Swift over the water
Opposite Tom Edmundson Hide - 1 singing Reed Warbler very close to the path in the reeds below the screen. Showed reasonably well occasionally as the reeds are not very dense there. 1 Lapwing and 1 Common Sandpiper on the newly scraped island.
