I managed to get a bit of birding done whilst coinciding a visit to my brother in Brussels.
We took a walk in the Sonian Forest in the hope of finding a Middle spotted Woodpecker, Crested Tit or Short-toed Treecreeper. We ended up with a list that could have been written anywhere in Manchester. Lots of Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Common Buzzards and Jays. A Grey Heron stood in a pool with Pochards, Tufted Ducks and several Egyptian Geese that I didn't really expect. Brussels also has plenty of Parakeets. I think the majority of them are Ring-necked, but they seem to be in every park and as usual, very very loud.
Today we found a Goldcrest, a Sparrowhawk and 6 birds overflying that looked very much like cranes but they were too high and I didn't take my bins either, so we'll never know.
Next time I will make greater effort to uncover something more unusual. (A Red Squirrel and 4 Roe Deer were a nice bonus in the forest).
