RE: Tyldesley General Environs

Approx 40 large gulls in the fields along Common Lane were mainly Lesser Black Backs but in with them a single adult Yellow Legged Gull ,a bit difficult to see as it was spending most of it's time sat down in long grass.

Approx 30 Shelduck flew east at 21:35 this evening over Parr Brow, in two flocks. Unfortunately didnt get a precise count as the first flock were out of sight by the time I had grabbed my bins. They werent particularly high up, but were going at some speed, calling with a lot of wing noise too.

Watched from the garden this evening, an adult Cormorant flew north over Mosley Common, then circled for about five minutes over the ridge of the Tyldesley Banks at Parr Brow, slowly gaining height, before heading off purposefully NE, giving the impression of a bird on migration. While I was watching it a Sand Martin flew west over the house

Common land and Combermere lane area this am. Several Redwing and Fieldfare in the many hedgerows. 4 Bullfinch, 5 Stock Dove flew over east. Gulls in the fields behind first farm from south end included 3 Great Black Backed Gulls, 12 Lesser Black Back and c. 70 Herring. More in fields further back towards Shakerley in field on brow but behind hedges so difficult to go through. Male Golden Pheasant  by track in wood at south end made a colourful difference though judging by the state of its tail and feet it hadn't come far from its enclsoure.

Walk from home along the Busway to Hough lane and back just prior to dusk produced some decent numbers of Bats still in the wing, several of which were  being hunted by a Sparrowhawk in Tyldesley cemetery. Also here c. 20 Rook left south at dusk and several Goldcrest were seen in some of the conifers dotted along the walk.

A Water Rail moved over Parr Brow at 9:04pm last night, in a general southerly direction. Giving a squealing flight call pretty much just as you would hear it in a reedbed, followed by a few chipping type calls. One of those moments where hearing a familiar call out of context totally throws you for a split second

Several hundred large gulls at Chanters this morning, mainly Lesser Black Backs and a few Herring Gulls in the mix. A very interesting LBB Gull with bright pink webs and legs.Structually identical to the accompanying LBBS, seem to remember we had a few similar birds at Richmond Bank over the years, presumably just an odd LBB ,couldn't unfortunately turn it into anything rarer !!!
