RE: BLACK REDSTARTS IN MANCHESTER CITY CENTRE

Black Redstart was singing near Leftbank in Spinningfields just off Bridge Street this morning approx 11.45am.

I could hear it whilst delivering to The Kitchens but unfortunately timed deliveries meant I couldn't hang around to try and locate him.

Singing male on Cross Street at about 815pm. Flew into Albert Square then on towards the Midland Hotel. I had wondered if it would head for the Town Hall, see the Peregrine thread for a possible reason why it didn't

Black Redstart singing from St Ann's Church Tower @ 11: 45 in the courtyard. Great views of the male hunting flies. A first for me and great to see it in my home city.

Just to keep everyone updated...
Been delivering in town all morning and right near a few favoured locations but no sight or sound of a Black Redstart at all today.
Ducie House, Ducie St...approx 10am nothing
Town Hall / Princess St...approx 10.30am nothing
Town Hall towards library approx 11.30am nothing
Currently on break near St.Ann's Square and no sign near Rapha or Mr.Thomas's Chop House.

Seems a bit strange not to hear it at all, maybe it's got a sore throat!

Unfortunately not Adam, although I heard it again when I turned onto Cross St en-route to next delivery, and the singing seemed to be coming from around the back of Mr.Thomas's Chop House but no time to stop and locate it, I'm in city centre most days so there's time yet.

Black Redstart was singing from St.Ann's Church clock tower at 12.45pm.
It fluttered out of view but still heard for a minute or so then flew off towards the Town Hall.

Nice to meet Adam Jones.

As a bit of a newbie I wasn't really familiar with Black Redstart song but on Sunday morning at 11.00 heard a song coming from the roof of Royal Exchange - unmistakeable! Watched for 5 mins but didn't see it, but next time will be more persistent

Brilliant views of the singing male Black Redstart this morning. I heard it singing in St Ann's Sq at about 8 am, saw it fly onto the roof of Mr Thomas's and as it sang more distantly I thought that might be it. However, I heard it a few minutes later from the Cross Street direction and as I walked round the corner by Frankie and Benny's saw the bird on the very top of the Diesel shop building, singing hard. Chris Chandler had joined me by this point, and we saw the bird fly-catching on the roof of the building and down the front, it perched briefly on a window sill about 2 floors up. What a beauty! It moved across the road to the south corner of King Street and then showed well on the roof of that building and the one further down on the same side towards the Town Hall. All in all I think we watched it for around 30 minutes. Really cool!

Yes, it was difficult to hear anything much over all that racket! I was heading somewhere more peaceful when the bird flew over The Slug and Lettuce (makes a change from Cuckoo's Nests I suppose). There was a Goldfinch singing in the trees in the courtyard area on Brazenose Street while I was listening to the Black Redstart. A couple of Mistle Thrushes squabbling away there as well.

I thought I heard a brief burst from the bird from the Lloyd St./Mount St. corner of the Town Hall roof, over the noise of power drills, at around 12.15; then about 12.30 a small bird called and flew over the roof of the Slug and Lettuce. Followed it round to Brazenose Street where it sang again from the roofs on either side of the street. It sang longest from the back of the Aviva building on Albert Square (the one with the little Liver bird on the roof biggrin) but even viewing from by the Hidden Gem on Mulberry Street I couldn't see it. Hung around a bit but no further sound of it so eventually headed over to St Ann's Square. No luck there but the Spanish guitar music from King Street North was very pleasantsmile

Male singing for around 10 minutes on off from face of Town Hall at roughly 8.30 this morning; moved onto police station on the corner of Mount Street and Lloyd Street, where he gave some great views. Flew off in the direction of the library, and returned a couple of minutes later where he continued to sing from the very top of the Town Hall until just before 9 o'clock.

Singing in full view on top of a window-cleaning gantry as viewed from opposite the Rapha shop in St. Ann's Courtyard from 3.00-3.10pm. Then not heard again as a Crow was hanging about on a nearby chimney-pot.

This record will be formally submitted.

The Black Redstart was singing this morning between 0715 and 0730 around Mr Thomas's Chop House. Unfortunately he remained out of sight and didn't sing again before I had to leave.

That's a shame Rob. It was sat nice and proud against the blue sky. Best view I've had for some time. I'm sure you'll get another opportunity.

Black Redstart singing and showing well at the top Mr Thomas Chop House. Viewed from the side of St Ann's Church.

Thanks Adam,
Had 15 min tacho break right next to St.Ann's Church that ended at 1.15pm, No sight nor sound of the Black Redstart up to that point, carried on with deliveries and took remaining 30 mins break later on Ducie St which is another used location but nothing there either.
Had I took full 45 min in the first instance I would've heard and seen him and probably managed a half decent photo.
hmm

It's a crying shame David but it's pretty much the same on virtually every other thread too...cry

Glad to hear there are still bird/birds present.
We seem to be receiving reports of some unusal timings for Black Redstart to be singing, but the places are generally the same.
I wonder what the possibility of a co-ordinated survey would be one morning this week to try and pin down presence numbers, then we can obviously officialy record this. PM or text if you're interested and we'll pick a morning.

No, unfortunately, a small minority of county birders submit the vast majority of the records we receive David so records from areas like this generally go unrecorded, which is especially unfortunate given the amount of development going on in the city centre. Please submit any and all your records David, doesn't matter if there from an area with 'regular observers' (many site regulars don't submit records) or indeed if you think someone else will submit it; always best to be sure. As it is these Black Redstarts are very poorly officially recorded.

Thanks for your consideration as always smile

It's a bit of a late posting now, but a bird was vying for position with 4 Goldfinch at 2.30pm on Monday, in Albert Square, at the highest point of the building which houses the Slug and Lettuce (other wildlife, I know!), opposite the Town Hall.

Does someone submit City Centre records - I very rarely visit?

Seems to be showing a pattern of favourable singing locations as that's twice I've seen it there now, and heard near Rain Bar opposite Bridgewater Hall recently.
It just so happens I've got a delivery near there again later so will post an update / sighting as soon as I can
Cheers

Thanks Rob and Ollie. I made my way into Manchester and managed to clock this handsome male singing on the roof tops around King Street and on Thomas's Chop House. At 5.30 the bird flew onto the town hall and I think it shot off in the direction of the Bridgewater Hall area.
