Stonechat on Pomona this morning.

Best of the rest, in what was a thoroughly enjoyable two and a half hours or so, from about 9.30:

2 goldcrest
Lots of singing dunnock
c10 goldfinch
1 bullfinch
2 meadow pipit
1 grey wagtail
2 song thrush
4+ mistle thrush
3 coot
1 goosander
7 mute swan (one with the blue darvic 4BXH)
3 snipe
5 cormorant
c190 black-headed gull
13+ common gull
10+ lesser black-backed gull
5+ herring gull
1 kestrel
1 peregrine over (heading off towards town, had a quick stoop at something before I lost it behind tall buildings)

Also a first winter lesser black-backed gull with a deformed beak, much like the 'curlew gull' mentioned as having been seen at Pennington Flash recently; slightly less exaggerated than that one, so perhaps more an 'Egyptian vulture gull'. Gave it quite a fearsome aspect!

From Trafford Road bridge to Media City bridge, from about 12 - 1.45:

1 song thrush singing
1 moorhen
3 coot
1 goldeneye
4 mute swan
18 cormorant
300+ black-headed gull
5+ common gull
c20 lesser black-backed gull
c20 herring gull
1 sparrowhawk

Extremely sad that what's such an excellent area for urban wildlife is to be destroyed.

I also read in MEN news they culled rabbits on the roundabout at Trafford Park to make way for new metrolink line. Apparently legal though

Hello fellow birders,

I am collating records of Pochard and Tufted ducks from Salford Quays as the area is selected as an SBI specifically for wintering ducks. We need the data to see if the site is still important for them.

Please can anyone who has any night time counts of Pochard and Tufted duck from the past 5 years PM me?

Cheers

Zoe

2x Mute Swan, 7x Mallard, 1x Domestic duck (Swedish Blue hybrid), 3x Canada Goose, 4x Blue Tit, 2x Carrion Crow, 20x Black Headed Gull, all around the Bridgewater Canal. The gulls were all perched on top of the white footbridge at one time.

1x Grey Wagtail, 1x Canada Goose, 1x Mallard, 1x Domestic duck (Swedish Blue hybrid), 3x Magpie, 10x Feral Pigeon along the Rochdale Canal.
