RE: Moses Gate.C.P.

Among all the usual birds there was a female Mandarin Duck on the angling lodge at Crompton Lodges at 2.30pm today. It was a bit skulky, hiding under the overhanging trees and shrubs at the car park end of the lodge.

Mute Swan ZY 6042 was seen at Heaton Park Boating lake with one other Adult and a young Cygnet on Saturday. It was also seen here at Moses Gate 31/07/2013 presumably while the other was still looking after the family at Heaton Park. Not seen at Moses before or since and could indicate breeding pairs are quite mobile and individual. The other one of the 'pair' was ZY2235 Darvic ring VN4 so ZY 6042 could be a previous cygnet. There were no other Swans on the boating lake.

Very Hot Noon 89 Mute Swans Great Crested Grebes, Heron, Common whitethroat, Chiffchaff, blackcap, Tufted Duck, Sparrow Hawk. I've been recording mute Swan rings over the last 3 months picture emerging is that the consistent 80 plus swans is made up of a regular bunch and a proportion of visiting Swans one at least appears to be from cheshire. The records will be submitted at the end of the year.

Also in Bolton the whole ranger service faces the axe as the extract from consultation states

'With regards to parks and open spaces, the council is proposing the closure of Animal World. Following earlier proposals to close Animal World, an action group was formed by local residents and it was agreed to introduce a charge for visitors and to increase volunteering with a view to reducing the cost of the facility. This has had some success and generated a small amount of income towards the running of the butterfly house.

However, the facility still costs the council 80,000 a year to run and the council does not feel it can be retained at the expense of further reductions in cleansing, grass cutting and other essential services.

The council is also proposing the removal of all Ranger posts in the parks. Whilst the Rangers provide a range of services to the public, if these posts were retained, further reductions in cleanliness would be required.'

No Tufted Ducks at all. Whether this is to do with the four territories set up by mute swans is unknown but there are some big Swans chasing other swans, canada geese and other water fowl. Other things 67 Mute Swans one with a Cheshire Tag. Lots of blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Common Whitethroat, Swallow & 1 Treecreeper

Moses Gate is the place to go at the moment if you want some close up photos of Goosander - a female often comes for food along with the other ducks and swans and a male is sometimes not far behind although a lot more skittish. On Tuesday this week there were three males and three females which stayed mainly in the centre of the largest pool, but from time to time they would come fairly close to the bank. A single male shoveler was also present in amongst all the usuals.

Some examples of the type of Goosander photos you can get here are on my Blog and Flickr sites.

Went for the Goosanders, Mandarin and Wood Duck. Got the first two, but didn't see the last one. At first there was just one male Goosander which at times came fairly close to the banks of the main lodge. Later two more flew in from the direction of the river, one male and one female.
