Four Jays on the north end of the golf course in Buile Hill Park. Looks like one adult and three juveniles, they were having a very noisy territorial argument with the local Magpies and Crows. evileye

There is a family of newly fledged Sparrowhawks in Buile Hill Park, they have been there for 4 days now. I have counted 3 juveniles and one large adult female. They are very vocal constantly mewing to each other and fighting with the local magpies. If anyone has a decent camera this would be a good opportunity to get some excellent shots. I don't want to disclose the exact location as I think they may have been nesting there. However they have all fledged now and are providing great entertainment.

Whilst parakeets are possible just about anywhere in the county and there's little to confuse them with when seen of heard well enough, sightings remain very scarce and erratic at best outside their south Manchester stronghold, including in the Salford borough.

hi martin, james walsh had 2 sightings of ring- necked parakeets around Pomona, 1 on the 19th oct 2012 & 1 on the 26th oct 2012, so I am pretty sure you wont be going insane.

Totally agree with Steve and Mike on this one Martin. Can't really see why you wouldn't see them in that area. Salford is one of those areas not that far from South or North Manchester. South Mcr is where a lot of the sightings occur, but you mention Whit Lane, the one near Agecroft I presume (used to deliver to a plastics firm right near it) well it's also close to Prestwich which is North Mcr, and looking at a post on June 18th on Gtr Mcr Ring-necked Parakeets thread some were seen in gardens there, so I'm not surprised at all Martin.
Cheers
Rob

No reason at all why you shouldn't see them, given how many are around Rusholme/fallowfield

I watched with my workmates this afternoon a large adult Peregrine chase and catch a juvenile Peregrine over my workplace on Liverpool street, Salford. Every local Pigeon, Starling and Black headed gull took to the air in panic as the very vocal juvenile did its best to avoid the adult bird but was caught and knocked out of the air and landed on my works roof. It perched on the edge of the guttering about 30' feet above us calling and trying to preen its left wing which had lost a couple of feathers in the attack. The adult bird circled high above us before swooping down at speed towards the juvenile bird which panicked and dropped off the gutter and flew just over our heads towards the EMR scrap yards across the road. The adult bird carried on chasing and diving at the juvenile as they both headed towards Regent road.

While watching a flock of eight Canada geese which flew over my workplace on Liverpool street this morning at 7.05am I noticed that one of the geese seem to start struggling to keep up with the others. As it lagged behind its wing beats became slower and it began to lose height. It looked like it died in flight as it stopped flying and its body went limp and it tumbled out of the sky landing somewhere behind my workplace possibly near the rail track.

Also a Raven flew over Liverpool street yesterday at 12.05pm.

Hi all. New here but wanted to report a sighting today.
First of all I am not very savvy in identifying birds and am curious if someone could tell me what I have just seen.
I saw a massive figure in the sky around 20:30 tonight in Eccles, significant enough for me to get up from the table and run outside to see it.
When outside I saw a bird with its wings spread on the roof of the house opposite.
I am certain it was a bird and each wing must have been c18in - 2ft. I didn't see the body of the bird so can not give any details of markings.
Is anyone aware of a bird of prey in the area and what could it be I saw.
Thanks in advance

Heron maybe?
I sometimes see them on roofs of houses near to me in Irlam presumably looking for easy pickings in garden ponds (including mine!) I have noticed a number of Herons quite low overhead locally as they fly back and to to Botany Woods heronry in the last few days presumably to feed their rapidly growing chicks!
