Am visit this morning in the Rain with Ian C was very Quite so returned this afternoon highlights.
AM visit
2 Gadwall.
1 Common Tern possibly 2
1 Redstart seen by Ian C
1 Pheasant.

PM visit
1 Juv Merlin flushed by me from about 30ft giving good view as it flew away.( Wish I had seen it before almost walking into it.)
1 Kestrel.
1 Little Grebe
3 Pheasants.
Water Rail heard

This morning partly with Ian C and then Malcolm

Bushes were a lot quieter than last week but there seemed to be a little wader movement which kept the interest up

15 Black-tailed Godwit flew SW down the Irwell Valley
11 Snipe also SW in one flock plus 5 on old hall Marsh
Lesser Whitethroat - canal at crow Trees Farm
2 Redstart (per Ian C) at Redstart hedge and the other in the Creek which I heard calling both thought that be juvs
4+ Blackcap
5+ Willow Warbler
2 Whitethroat
2 Great spotted Woodpecker
6 Teal
3 Common Tern
Common Buzzard
Tree Pipit heard calling over withins

Simon's Hobby, or another one, was back at 7.30 chasing Sand Martins over the res. also 1 Oystercatcher, 2 Kestrels and 1 Common Tern.

Hobby chasing hirrundines over Capsticks then flew over the reservoir towards Bury at 6:55am
Yellow Wagtail with the Highland Cattle and 2 female Redstarts Elton Goyt
1 Teal, but no sign of Garganey
2 broods of Tufted Ducks still
2 Water Rail

My attempt to get out this afternoon which I didn't quite Finnish my round. highlights;

Juvenile grey wagtail close
2 buzzards (one suprising brief very close encounter from a usually busy footpath)
Green sandpiper (Very brief)
Garganey near the car park
Common tern
Whitethroat heard

This a.m. with Malcolm, best was 1 Garden Warbler(in large tree at end of hedgerow below pumphouse), 1 Teal, 1 Common Tern, Tufted Duck with 4 well grown young and 1 Snipe. Also a possible Tree Pipit over S.

This morning 7.15 to 10.30:

My first site record of a Hobby, perched in a tree by the creek and looking rather bedraggled in the drizzle. 1 Sparrowhawk.

Good numbers of warblers still in the hedgerows with Lesser Whitethroat, Whitethroat, Blackcap, Chiffchaff and lots of Willow Warbler in sub song- almost like spring!

55 Lapwing and 4 Snipe.

4 Swift.

2 Common Tern.

3 Lesser Whitethroat, 4-5 Willow Tits and a Nuthatch of note along the hedges between the Creek and Capsticks area. Also 1 Teal, 3 Common Tern and 10+ Swift present.

Birds of note 7.30 to 11.20:

Good raptor day with Peregrine on pylon behind the yacht club and later on the old chimney, 2 sightings of Sparrowhawk, 1 Buzzard and 1 Kestrel.

6 Lapwing and at least 13 Snipe on the small pool in Old Hall Marsh.

3 Common Tern and 1 Kingfisher.

5 Swift early on among the Hirundines.

Nice mixed flock near Capsticks that included Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, 1 Sedge Warbler, plus Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap.

1 very very scruffy looking whitethroat seen along the canal.

Also a few juvenile heron and lapwings hanging around.

7-8.30 this a.m. on the res. 1 Common Tern, 1 Little Grebe and the 4 Tufted Duck Ducklings still. On path between the res. and Capsticks a freshly dead Canada Goose minus head and neck. A Water Rail seen well along the canal and lots of Swift overhead, minimum of 150 today. Finally large flock, 100+ of Goldfinch on embankment below pumphouse

3 Sedge Warbler and 2 Grasshopper Warbler singing. Also Willow Warbler, Whitethroat and Blackcap.

This a.m. with Malcolm(welcome back after your accident), 1 Grasshopper Warbler reeling (not seen) in Old Hall marsh, just 1 singing Sedge Warbler, 3 Kestrels, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Common Tern and 2 Kingfisher (1 heading towards the river carrying a fish) were the highlites.

2 little egrets briefly landed on sailing club bay at 10:00

Nuthatch at least 1 calling constantly and flying off with food in beak to feed young

Whitethroats feeding at least 2 fledglings at mouth of creek
