This doesnt answer your question Simon, but on the subject of county year-lists, the stand-out one among those published has to be Pete Berrys total of 172 species in 1993. These days, with smart phones, sat-nav, etc, weve frankly got it handed to us on a plate in comparison. I tried a GM year list in 1995 and only saw in the low 160s - 161 I think (though I did tend to be off and about elsewhere in the country or doing other stuff much more back then).

And way back then Yellow Legged Gulls and Caspian Gulls hadn't been invented,and every bird seen was mainly either self found or seen after chasing out after work when someone rang me at home as mobile phone weren't invented then either,good fum though,but don't think I'd do it now with the price of fuel.
...it's not just fuel neither Pete, running costs can mount up such as tyres, wear and tear parts and general repairs, valeting, etc

I notice that a couple of stalwart forum members have recently really put their backs into doing a 'Big GM Year'. I was wondering if either Dave or Ian was likely to write up an account of the trials and tribulations of seeing 170+ species in the county in a year? I for one would love to hear about it as the existing articles on the website are great, and it would be brilliant to read about some stuff that was happening while I was out and about too.
