BWP Vol 1 - says that Goosanders will "often nest in roof spaces." Large open chimney pots - why not? Maybe not as weird as it first seems

Many years ago in Finland I was told of the habit of female goosanders of walking on the roofs of summerhouses, and was delighted to see and hear this regularly for myself. I don't know what the behaviour represents, but your female seems to have been acting in a similar fashion.

Today whilst sitting at my computer,a Female Goosander flew around the surrounding house roofs for 5 minutes and landed on 2 separate chimneys. It seemed to dip its head down them both, but it was harassed off by the resident Jackdaws.now the only reasonable explanation I can think of is that, as we are only a stonesthrow from Naden brook,it was looking for a suitable nest site? As they are Tree-hole nesters, what do you think?Weird to see how she managed to navigate the aerials and phone wires, and seemed quite happy on the chimneys. Not what you expect of a Goosander.i,m sure it was not interested in the Jackdaws nests as they were not around when it showed up,anyway just thought I would share a strange moment, cheers Dave
