Cant comment on groups in Manchester Rob, but over this way there is the Leigh Ornithological Society who cover quite an area.

Rob, the L.O.S. website with our fieldtrip and talk details and Facebook group addresses are in the links below. There is also a birding class run by Peter Baron at three different sites (Prestwich, Whitefield and Ramsbottom) which great for beginners as well as more experienced birders. Field trips are an integral part of this class. Good luck!

I know that Stockport Birdwatching Society run monthly coach trips and would be very willing to help a beginner. Their programme of indoor and outdoor meetings are listed via the above links.
