Stoat in ermine working the large bed of rushes up from the Water House this morning. The first one I have ever seen. Looking rather splendid and conspicous now that the snow has all but gone.

4th January Over the sunlit meadows following the previous nights hard frost a peacock butterfly was fluttering about and sunning itself on the grass. It was in very good condition.]
