Visited this amazing place on Friday 5th June - arrived 9am and stayed until 12.30 and I was the only visitor on the entire reserve - unless anybody else arrived on foot or by bike. It is a little paradise, tucked away in the fold of the Sychnant pass. I spent almost all of my time in the woodland, with the Pied Flycatchers (hard to see) and Redstarts (easy to see and remarkably confiding for photos!) It was one of the most enjoyable birding experiences of my brief career to date!
Redstart - 3 pairs Pied Flycatcher - one female supplying nestlings in a nest box, one male fleetingly glimpsed. Tawny Owl House Sparrow Wood Pigeon Jackdaw Rook Raven (heard) Jay Cuckoo (heard very close, not seen) Robin Blackbird Wren Dunnock Chaffinch Blue Tit Great Tit Coal Tit Swallow Swift Goldfinch Willow Warbler (heard) Chiffchaff
I dipped on the Wood Warbler said to be present in one area, in spite of the warden's very helpful annotation to the map which certainly helped me with the Redstarts and Pied Flycatchers.
This was one of Frank Horrocks favourite places when he used to visit his Auntie in Rhos he was always up there :)

Glad you got there, Austin, and so glad that my recommendation to you didn't fall flat either. I have visited it now for the last 3 years and never been disappointed. I do urge everyone who visits to make a donation, no matter how small - the donation box is in the entrance hall of the house. The reserve relies on donations etc for its upkeep, so let's keep it going

My first visit here and what a day male and female Pied Flycatcher, Common Redstart and Cuckoo! This place is great I would recommend it to anyone, more info below and more pics on my Blog.
