From the tight bend on St John's road in Chew Moor a short track leads to Wicken Lee's Farm. Just past the farm, the track crosses a bridge over the Wigan/Bolton Railway, and paths run across to the Preston/Bolton railway. The land between the railways consists of a mixture of scrub land and farm land with some reedbed. The scrub land was tipped on over 25 years ago. As well as the footpaths there is a splendid old tipping road (disused)that runs right through to Lostock Lane. Middlebrook runs through the scrub ,but here the Trail is on the other side of the Middlebrook valley. This is a large remote area that includes a few farms and properties and also the amazing green box railway footbridge, just down from Lostock Hall.
Today 2 hours around noon: Buzzard 3.... inc. 1 juv ... Often low over Kestrel...1 or 2 hunting Lapwing...12 over Jackdaw.... 23 House Sparrows...20 Grey Heron...1 Fieldfare flock...c70 on farmland and hawthorn Numerous Robins/Blackbirds/Woodpigeon/Carrion Crows/Magpies Flock of 6 Great tits Linnets...3 Collared Dove...3 Jay...2 Mistle Thrush...1 Siskin...1 This is a fascinating area, which may not have been reported on previously. According to locals, Sparrowhawks are regular and a Hobby has been active in summer since 2007!
