That sounds like a great way to approach things - visiting a variety of different habitats in each season of the year. It should certainly give your grandson the chance to see a good number of species.
Whilst I can't give you (at least off the top of my head) a list of sites to visit, some of the Bolton birders should be able to help, I can provide you with some information on the national Bird Atlas and GM Breeding Atlas 2008-11. There is a separate section on this forum for the GM Atlas which is worth having a look at.
If you would like to drop me a pm with your email address, I can send you some info on how the records you and your grandson collect can be used for both Atlases. Also have a look at the Bird Atlas and Bird Surveys section on Manchester Birding and the section on Bird Recording and County Rarities.
Best of luck

last week my 15 year old grandson asked me if i would help him with his duke of edinburgh,s award for his skill he wants to do bird watching.i only have a brief idear
of what it intails bronze silver and gold 3month and 50 species, 6 months and 12 month.
I have sugested we do 4 differant habitat sites in each quarter winter spring summer and autumn
do a weekly diary of one site moses gate or doe hay res if we can get on (its closer to home )
it would be nice if the work he does would be of use to one/any of the bto serveys
I would appreciate any in put/help from the board from any one who can help ,may have done something like this before, sites to pick (we are based in farnworth)
I have a good basic birdwatching skill level but there is always room for improvement and the practice will do me good
any help appreciated am i out of my depth!
