We were on our way to Hassop Station last week when we got a puncture (damn potholes!) so spent the afternoon sitting in Buxton Pavilion car park instead! Went back today and saw 1 solitary waxwing - very close and obliging - of course, we met someone who had made it there last weekend and seen 'around 100' - isn't it always the way?!!

Sizeable flocks have been on the outskirts of Bakewell, on the Monsal Trail at Hassop Station, for the last 3 weeks. Saw 40+ there yesterday, eating Hawthorn berries and dropping down just yards from us to drink from a puddle by the side of the track.

28 - 32 Waxwing at Forshaw Street / Battersby Lane, Warrington at times through the day. Calling nicely this afternoon when I had time to stop and watch as opposed to views from traffic queues to date this year. Around 3pm a second flock of 20 or so flew in twice from the direction of Winwick Road circling the trees the other group is roosting in before returning that direction (flocks have been seen near Tesco). A group of eight Starlings flew by the second time the mobile flock appeared to give a nice flight comparison.

Watched a group of 12 in Sheffield today. The usual hotspot in Crosspool. Numbers have been building all week and I'm sure they'll be around for a few more days as there are still an awful lot of berries on several trees. Saw the odd bird flycatching as well.
Numbers have really built-up now. Around 200 yesterday including a group that were feeding on Leyland Cypress cones (see photo) even though there were still plenty of berries in several trees along Manchester Road.
Reports on various media of seven at New Road Arley (near the Evergreen Shipping containers), three in Warrington Town Centre (Foreshaw Street / Battersby Lane), flyovers at Woolston Eyes and Moulton this morning so certainly seem to have arrived in North Cheshire.

Long overdue Waxwing, a single adult, in Sheffield yesterday. It was in the berry trees that line the local hot-spot Manchester Road in Crosspool (ironically the first built-up area you hit in Sheffield after crossing the Snake Pass). None reported today though.

20 Waxwings in Middlewich today, on Meadow View on the outskirts on the Northwich side, CW10 9QB for Sat Navs. The birds were in a pink Rowan a third of the way down on the right (2 or 3 berry trees here, with lots of berries left). They frequently flew off over the houses towards the all weather pitches and perched up in trees over there. They are very skittish so staying in the car may be best

Approx 100 Waxwings at Milner Street , Warrington this morning, though disappearing a lot of the time in two groups. At least 2 colour-ringed birds among them, but difficult to get good enough views of legs to read them (a Merseyside Ringing Group bird and a Grampian Ringing Group bird). Could probably be picked up on photos more readily.

Headed to Barnton late afternoon as there had been reports of Waxwings there and it is very local to me. However on arrival birding mates present informed me that the flock of 24 had been flushed by a Sparrowhawk. We then waited with others for around 45mins with no luck. Consolation of year ticks of Sparrowhawk and Grey Wagtail were welcome however!
A quick whizz around some other berry trees that we had been told about proved fruitless (no pun intended ) so we headed home. But on taking the shortest route back to the main road, down Manor Drive past the Barn Owl Pub I noticed a large group of birds in the top of a tree - Waxwings They came doem to feed on a rowan and showed really well, a count revealing 28 birds so not only had we found them in a new feeding location, we had also self-found 4 new birds!! Not a bad result, but they then flew off, presumably to roost as the light was fading fast. With so many berries around Barton as a whole these birds will probably stick around for a while

Had a look for the Waxwings in Blackburn this morning en route to the Fylde Coast. Initially, saw around a dozen birds adjacent to the Go Outdoors store but once we were out of the car they vanished. Did a circuit of going over to Garden Street, Griffin Pub and back to the Go Outdoors store, checking the berry laden trees without success. However, we then learnt of the flock being behind the aforementioned pub, slightly in to the small housing estate. Shortly after we arrived (six or seven minutes from Go Outdoors) the flock of around twenty birds flew in. Very confiding, moving between two or three trees on the estate.
Thanks for the info Austin. I used to live just down the road in Darwen, so know the area well. I am birding in Lancs tomorrow so it would be rude not to try and find them! Nice photographs you took.

Birdguides reporting Waxwings in Blackburn today. Usual spot is the car park on Mincing Lane/Weir Street - see directions etc a few posts down from January 2014. I have also been told of a sighting of a few birds at Go Outdoors which is at the western end of King Street near St Wilfred's School. I have only the very basic/free Birdguides info, so not sure if it is one group of birds, or two.

Four Waxwings still present around the car park (berries a-plenty) at the junction of Mincing Lane and Weir Street in Blackburn, which is just off the A666 approaching the town centre. If not feeding in trees at the north end of the car park, they have a tendancy to rest/preen on the tv aeriel of the restaurant across the road at the opposite end of the car park. They have been around for a week or so and this has become a regular spot over the years.
