Buy any of the popular bridge cameras-panasonic lumix fz38,fuji hs10,nikon p100,canon sx20-any of those will suit someone who just wants decent record shots.

Is this for taking photos of Andrew Sachs?

I found important features are for ease automatic focus, for effect manual settings, essential high optical zoom, good mega pixel, and then ease of carrying or size to the budget you can afford. I use lumix which gives good pictures x 13 optical zoom and an older one with manuel settings. That for just taking snaps as you trot around. Others on this site will use much higher spec cameras and lenses to get some of the good shots you see in the gallery. Another tip go to the libarary and get a book on photography a few simple rules or norms make all the difference for little effort. You have to decide which camera will suit your needs and what you can afford.

neat image is an add on software for photoshop that reduces noise (grain) dramatically, that may help.
also look to see what the cameras iso is set on - the higher the number the more the noise.
if you are looking to change to something more versatile then am afraid you are going to have to get more technical!
