Note that I reported this bird on 30th September 2016 as Western (Indian) Spot-billed Duck with the caveat that it might be a Western (Indian) Spot-billed Duck x Mallard hybrid, it was not wearing any leg rings, but had most of the right wing missing, clear evidence of pinioning and therefore a bird that has presumably been released from captivity onto the site
Identification is spot on if the pun may be excused.
(The prominent white tertials eliminate the Chinese race).

Over the past few months I've noticed an unusual duck on Fog Lane pond. I'm certain it is an Indian Spot-billed Duck.
I'm aware this sounds far-fetched so I've attached a photo. I see I'm not the first to identify this duck here either. The photo does not show the bird's green secondaries, which distinguish it from the female Mallard, who's secondaries are blue.
Speaking to somebody who knew the petting zoo which used to be part of Fog Lane very well, this kind of duck was not kept at the petting zoo. So it's likely to have come from another collection.
Strange!
Otherwise, I have noted the usual birds in Fog Lane this week. A large flock of Redwings is still here; Great spotted woodpeckers, Nuthatches, a Goldcrest and of course the Parakeets.

Had a stroll around the park late morning - haven't been there since student days 40 years ago
Found two Ring-necked Parakeets just inside the Parkville Road entrance - heard them calling before I saw them hidden in amongst the leaves.
Just seen 3 of the ring-necked parakeets (I'm really sorry If that's wrong, because after reading the sticky I'm terrified!) opposite my house. They've fed on my bird table before. They flew onto my roof today, but think they were put off from the 40 plus birds already in my garden... Any tips on how I can attract them?

male & female both in nest hole yesterday afternoon. Plenty of Redwings about too and several mistle thrushes. Has anyone else noticed how the Starling in the park are mimicing the parakeets? Several convincing parakeet calls were traced to groups of Starlings!!!

Three Ring-necked Parakeets including one entering the nest hole showed very well even though the park was typically busy for a sunny Sunday. They were pretty quiet making soft, chuntering contact calls and no raucous screeching. A Treecreeper was in song nearby.

Spent a very pleasant hour wandering round the park 5.30-6.30 yesterday.
There were 5 parrots/parakeets in the wooded area on the west side of the park-
3 Ring-Necked Parakeets (1m, 2f) One of them kept disappearing into a hole in a tree.
The Amazon Parrot, which I've not seen before, but couldn't be missed as it was making a right racket.
There was also a parakeet that was slightly larger than the RNPs. It was a very grubby dark brown/red colour (looked like it'd taken a mud bath) and had a very bright streak of blue in the wing. Anyone got any ideas what this might be?
Also saw: 1 x Waxwing in a tree by the ponds Flock of 12 Redwing Great, Blue & Long-tailed Tits. Large flock of Goldfinches and 3 Greenfinches Great Spotted Woodpecker Robins, Dunnocks and a Wren Mallards, Canada Geese, Coot & Moorhen.
