Tried the pier this morning for three hours. No storm petrels unfortunately, but many manx shearwaters, gannets and a continual trickle of kittiwakes. Just two sandwich terns through, bird of the day was probably a little tern early on. I'll try again in a few weeks for the stormies.

Saturday 1st August, 7.30-8.30am Couldn't find any recent info on storm petrels off Workington lighthouse, so went more in hope than certainty. I also thought I might be a bit late as most old reports came from late June/July. Wind wasn't ideal either - blowing enough, but SSE unfortunately! I needen't have worried. From the car park I found the lobster pot markers off shore through my binocs. Amongst them was flying a small, dark bird. Tried scoping from the side of the coast guard building (?), then from the causway, which got you out further but also got you soaked by spray! So back up to the comfort of the north side of the building. I didn't count them but probably between 15-20 stormies in the hour I was there, along with kittiwakes, gannets and a few sandwich terns (visibility was poor beyond 500yds). Didn't see another birder whilst I was there.
