20+ at the end of our street for the last three nights (always about 7pm). Looks like a gathering of several local colonies, or perhaps just one colony.

Sorry for the late response there is a pond nearby, I have spoken to a friend who has a farm nearby and has had up to 50+ nest in the past in the barns, he leaves the doors open for ease of access. He says there has been approximately ten this year, we have none in the area, do we have a reason as they seem to have disappeared this year- which is very sad really for us all.

Well down everywhere, Roy. Out of interest, do you live near water, and is there a source of mud (for nests) near your avenue?

I have had two nest on the front of my house for the past three years , we had a pair visit and we have had a lot of noise from the nest up to about a week ago. We normally have the street full as there are normally 10 nest minimum in the close but this year there seem to be hardly any, is it to soon or are the numbers down this year?

Hs anyone tried one of the Martin nest boxes you can buy - I've read that the Swift version needs you to play a CD of swift calls but not seen much about the Martin ones? Peter

A pair of House Martins has nested under the eaves of my house every year since 2004. I thought they were late returning this year and instead of the usual 6 pairs that nest on my street, only 2 pairs returned about mid May. Although the nest under my eaves is still intact, it has not been used. I have noticed in Wardle a pair flying up to a nest on a Barratts house that was only built in about 2005. This may be a new site, as I don't recall them nesting there before.

I've just had a detailed summary of House Martin nests at Northenden from Peter Helm. In 2008 there were 13 nests. This year, the same locations were checked and only 5 found.
That about sums up the House Martin situation this year.
