2prs Great Crested Grebes ( 1pr with 1 youngster the other with 2, all resting on their parents back).

A Garden Warbler was in the SW corner, and a family of 7 Long Tailed Tits by the golf course.
A Mistle Thrush was on the Pitch & Putt coarse at Walton Hall.

Appleton Reservoir
3prs Great Crested Grebes, 2 of which have young, but I'm unsure how many youngsters there are, and they will need to take care as a large mink was seen nearby.
Around the edge of the reservoir were : 1m Bullfinch, 2m Blackcaps, 3 singing Chiffchaffs, 1 Willow Warbler and 1 Grey Heron.
Just to the South of the reservoir, a footpath leaves Park Lane and leads onto the "Delamere Way" path.
This track is well worth exploring in the direction of Hatton, not just for birds, but on sunny days it's great for butterflies too.
Although it passes through a game shooting area, so is best avoided on Saturdays in autumn and winter.
Seen along the path this evening were : 1 singing Yellowhammer, 3 Buzzards, 2 Common Whitehthroats, 2 Red Legged Partridges, 3 singing Song Thrushes and a singing Chiffchaff.

Single "small" Tern hawking for flying insects over the water.
Size between that of a Swallow and Black-headed Gull. Ash grey upper wings with no visible markings. White under-body with a short tail. Black bill, white forehead with small black crown.
I am familiar with all the usual Tern species, but this just seemed different. Anybody got any ideas?
sounds like a Juv Black Tern to me, I have seen them on Appleton Res in the past, and its the same date that one turned up last year at Houghton Green pool, and it felt like black tern weather to me today,so that's my guess :)
A mate of mine has just been down there. It's a juvenile Black Tern just like you said John.
could be a good place for anyone who wants to photograph one, as its fairly small and there used to be a decent car park just before the Res :)

Was the tail deeply forked?
Not noticeably, appeared more gull like than that of a Tern.
