For ptarmigan (& dotterel) try Carn Ban Mor- minor road off the B970 at Feshiebridge, then a steady walk up from Achlean. Bit of a hike, but may be quieter than the top of Cairngorm. Forest Lodge used to be reckoned a good spot for Scottish Crossbill
