Went up to Watergrove this afternoon to look for Hen Harrier without success. However at approx. 15:00hrs I heard Ravens calling and a pair appeared high up WSW, flying towards my viewpoint. They were followed by a single and another pair. Within less than a minute further birds appeared from the same direction, until there was a total of 11 all in view at the same time over the valley. Two of the birds locked talons and spun around, losing height until they released from one another. The Ravens then departed east. It makes you wonder where they came from and where they were going to. The previous highest count here was of 5 in February last year all heading NW.
There are only two higher counts in GM: 16 at Ernocroft and 12 at Ludworth Moor both in September last year and two other records of 11 birds at Dovestones in June 1998 and Romiley in Oct 2003.
Also the first male Goosander of the autumn on the resr (there were 3 red-heads last week) and a Kingfisher. 2 Little Owls and 2 Stonechat on the moor.
