NOT BINS,BUT ANYONE LOOKING FOR DIGITAL CAMERAS OR LENSES,DO WHAT I JUST DID,I BAUGHT A CAMERA MAG,IN FACT ANY OF THIS MONTHS CAMERA MAGS,AS I SEEM TO PICK EM ALL UP!!THERES AN ADVERT FOR JESSOPS A FULL PAGE THAT STATES TAKE THIS VOUCHER INTO OUR STORE AND WE WILL MATCH ANY PRICE ON ANY LENS OR DIGITAL CAMERA,THAT IS ADVERTISED ELSWHERE IN THIS MAGAZINE ,I DID THIS AND GOT £91 OFF A £260 SIGMA LENS,I GOT IT FOR 170 HAS WAREHOUSE EXPRESS WERE ADVETISING IT AT THAT PRICE.MAKE SURE YOU RING JESSOPS FIRST TO CHECK THEY HAVE THE PRODUCT IN STOCK(TRAFFORD CENTER THE BEST ONE LOCALLY),TELL THEM TO PUT ONE AWAY FOR YOU.DON'T TELL EM YOU HAVE THE VOUCHER.JUST TAKE IT ALONG WITH THE MAG AND PLONK IT ON THE COUNTER.MARK YOUR MATCHING PRICES IN THE MAG AND THEY WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO HONNER IT.LIKE I SAID I SAVED £91 FOR A £4 magazinep.s you could save £300 on a Digital slr AND DO SOME PROPER PHOTOGRAPHY

I agree Ian. A good example is the HRs i mentioned earlier Warehouse express and Pennine are doing them for £189 In Focus at martin mere, where i tried them out, want £239. Some places will price match if you ask but i don't think they'd come down £50. I bought an eyepiece from Pennine a few years ago and they promised to match any price advertised in Birdwatching magazine, which they did saving me £19. On the whole the prices are very similar but it certainly pays to shop around for specific models.

I don't think it's being cheeky at all Geoff, I thinks it's good advise I've always gone to the dealers (and asked other birders for a peek through theirs) checked out what's on offer then gone home and checked prices on the 'net, recently though and certainly on my most recent purchase I found dealers to be very closely matched in price and Pennine Optics in Rochdale came out best for me and are somewhere I've used afew times recently You're right about it being nice to have somewhere to take something back to if it becomes defective but internet dealers (such as Warehouse Express) have very good and prompt service and this isn't anything like the problem you might think

tony, remiss of me not tell you went to martin mere and purchased a pair of summit (who)8x42 for 99quid which although at the low entry level of bins have raised my viewing pleasure by several levels.in the shop i tried more pricey one,s but with my myopic eyes the improvement in clarity wasn,t worth the pounds,so in conclusion i,d echo your adivce go to a shop and try em out ,be cheekey and then internet em if you want ,but if these go wrong i know i can take em back.the man in the shop also gave me some sound advice on me scope which has had a rough time recently.

Hi Tony, I have a pair of HR 10x42 and have been very happy with them over the years. I tried the new ones HR WP 8x42 yesterday and they are superb. They now come with twist up eyecups,clck stop dioptre, internal focussing and fully waterproof.The close focus is also improved to 3m. You can buy these for £189!! an absolute steal. Think i'll be investing soon.

Mine are getting decidedly tatty and easily get mis-aligned with the slighest knock so I may be looking for something new.

tony,tom,rez,thanks for the advice i am going to sacrifice sunday to optics shopping and go and try them out before i buy,it looks like the 10x42 spec rather than 8x42 ups the ante a little bit ,am leaning towards 2nd hand but can,t dawdle cos the birds are already arriving.

Try Focalpoint - they often have a good selection of second-hand optics. Also their showroom overlooks a birdtable and farmland so effectively you can try stuff in the field to see if it suits your eyes.
I have Opticron 10 x 42 "high resolution" and have been very pleased with them. But I don't think they are available these days.

Alright Geoff,
Try Opticron Aspheric 8x40. They were voted number 1 in a 2005 BBC Wildlife magazine survey of binoculars under £200. They're the best binoculars I've tried for under £100. I think Birdnet are selling them for £80.

hi all,I am about to invest in some 10x42 bins to help my county list off the bottom rung,but the choice and range is bewildering.The budjet is £80/£100 and i was wondering if any one has made a recent purchase they like, or some good (optically) second hand ones are available?
