0730 till 1100 1 woodcock, flew over the res and pumphouse and dropped down over the river beyond bennies, only my 2nd at elton, well done steve for picking it up. 1 curlew over pochard,teal,gadwall and goldeneye on res. a few meadow pipits passing through. aprox 140 large gulls coming to and from pilsworth tip. 1 buzzard over.

If you can think back to beak shape then you should be able to pin down the ID. Wren's beaks are similar to warblers but buntings have thicker stubbier bills, very different. Can you remember beak shape? It's always helpful to look at this if you get an unknown bird as it can often assign them to a family or choice of a limited number of families of birds, hope this helps

Thanks Doc, it wasn't a Wren I'm now thinking perhaps a couple of female Reed Buntings, I know Reed Buntings are always around that area. One of the joys, my wife and I are finding, of bird watching... never be 100% sure of anything!!!!

Hi Neil, a head only view of a well-marked wren may suggest Sedge Warbler, worth looking at photos & drawings on the web of a Wrens head close up (see http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/w/wren/ for example), could that be the culprit? You wouldn't be the first person to mistake it as a warbler species.

Walk along the path on the embankment top this afternoon, highlight being a pair of sedge warblers at the end opposite the yacht club ,capsticks marsh . First of the year for me and my wife. Also a number of goldeneye, and 4 oystercatchers plus the usuals. ( always wanted to say that!!)

the iceland gull was seen to fly off from just outside elton towards dumers lane and head south at around 3.45pm so probably going to roost.info thanks to ian peters.sorry ian but i didnt know about this bird either until i read about it on the forum on thursday night, anyway lets hope we get to see it over the weekend.

First winter Iceland Gull (first for Elton) again present in with good numbers of large gulls on the reservoir at 1.40pm, occaisionally flying around.

No luck this evening at 5pm. Almost all the big gulls already moved on. Just 3 juv lesser black backed gulls. I adult herring gull. 0 common gull. And the usual black headed gulls.

First winter Iceland Gull still present to at least 2.15pm, in the centre of the reservoir amongst about 400 Herring Gull, 150 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 26 Great Black-backed Gulls (first Iceland Gull record for many years and long overdue!). Also single Ringed Plover and Pochard present.
